Walt Disney World Advances Its “Affordable and Attainable Housing Initiative”

Every Disney fan grows up wishing they could live at Walt Disney World, and soon enough, those childhood dreams might come true. Earlier this year, the Walt Disney Company announced its plans for a new housing development in Central Florida, offering affordable housing for the Cast Members and community.

Now, some new advancements have been made regarding the project.

When we mention Walt Disney World housing, you may immediately think of Celebration, Florida, the master-planned community created by the Walt Disney Company.

You may also think of Golden Oaks, the upscale residential community owned by Disney Signature Experiences and built by Walt Disney Imagineers themselves.

If you’re noticing a pattern, you’re not alone. It’s no secret that Walt Disney World becomes increasingly expensive each year, making it difficult for everybody to enjoy. Golden Oaks and Celebration are no different, and these luxurious housing options are out of the question for many of us.

That’s where Disney’s current Affordable and Attainable Housing Initiative comes in.

Earlier this year, Disney ‘earmarked’ 80 acres to create affordable housing options on Walt Disney World property. Today, Disney has revealed this project’s exact location and developer.

Located only “a few miles away from Magic Kingdom,” Disney has chosen an area “west of State Road 429.” This housing development will consist of at least 1,300 units and is located near shopping (including Flamingo Crossings town center), schools, and of course, Walt Disney World.

The third-party who will “build, own and operate the property” has been revealed as The Michaels Organization. Currently, Disney expects this upcoming housing development to be “limited to applicants within a certain income range.”

As for the income range in question, there’s no information disclosing just how affordable this community will be, nor who exactly will be able to afford it. Although, it’s worth noting that Disney states a commitment to “finding solutions to this challenge” of finding an affordable place to live.
