NEW Changes Coming to This Classic Magic Kingdom Attraction, Reopening Soon!

Lots of changes are underway at the Magic Kingdom, lending to new and exciting experiences for Guests visiting the Walt Disney World Resort in the years to come.

Among these changes are the opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run, which is currently planned for Spring 2023. Construction on Disney’s next big thrill ride has caused disruptions not only to the Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. gift shop in Tomorrowland, but also for the Walt Disney World Railroad which has been closed for years due to work on the new coaster.

Despite teasing the return of the Walt Disney World Railroad for several months, no official news has been shared on the return of this beloved Magic Kingdom attraction, until now.

The Disney Parks Blog just announced that this opening-day attraction will return to Magic Kingdom Park for “the holidays season.” Theme park journalist Scott Gustin confirms that Cast Member previews are already underway at the ride, so while not yet official, it is very likely that the Walt Disney World Railroad will be open to Guests once again for the Christmas holiday weekend, December 24-25, 2022.

Along with the ride’s return to this Disney Park, comes a newly refreshed track for the 100-year-old original steam trains, and new narration and sound effects.

The Disney Parks Blog notes:

Not only did this historic train undergo track updates and maintenance—as 100-year-old vintage steam trains do—the creative minds at Walt Disney Imagineering also seized this moment to revisit the narration and introduce an all-new voice to bring guests into the beloved stories they encounter as they travel from one magical land to the next. ‘The familiar whistle of its steam engine will be complemented by exciting new sounds and voices,’ the team of Imagineers shared. ‘A new conductor has assumed the role, carrying on the long tradition of warm welcomes and amusing anecdotes while adding fresh commentary and story to the journey.’

The new voiceover on the attraction will serve as a conductor who shares Walt Disney’s original passion for historic steam trains, enhancing the sense of nostalgia that Guests will be immersed in as the train moves around the Park.

Disney’s announcement notes:

For these meticulously restored steam trains, we know the scenic grand circle tour must be guided by a voice our guests can envision and resonate with. Someone who grew up on Main Street, U.S.A., dreaming of the day they’d be on the railroad. They’ve now achieved that dream, and they know everyone and everything at Magic Kingdom … an unofficial mayor of sorts. This conductor is humble, genial, and knowledgeable, and he’s eager to help passengers of these iconic steam trains get to their destinations around the park he loves so dearly.
