When is Disney World the Busiest During the Year?

It might seem like Disney World is always busy, but there are specific times throughout the calendar year where we see increased crowd levels.  If you are looking to plan a trip to Disney World and hope to avoid crazy crowd levels, we have when you should try to avoid making your Disney World vacation.  Don’t worry though.  If you do have a Walt Disney World vacation planned for one of these busy times of year, we have tips for that as well. Disney planning can feel like a full time job and not a Disney vacation, but we are here to help you along the way.

New Year Eve/Day

One of these busiest times of the year comes right as the new year begins.  So many families have time off for both New Year Eve and day making it a fantastic time to take a Disney vacation.  Also many pass holders and passionate Disney World fans love to celebrate the end of one year and welcome in a new one at their favorite place making it a super popular time for a Disney vacation.  Because of this, you will find crowds to be extremely heavy during this time of year.  If you are heading down during this time, make sure you have you Disney resort booked, dining reservations planned and consider looking into the Genie+ to help with your theme park touring.

The Disney World monorail soars over vibrant gardens and a sparkling pond, capturing the magic of the park on a sunny day.

Spring Break/Easter

Another extremely busy time of year is spring break.  This brings in a lot of families as those that live in the cold northern states want to escape the cold by heading down to the sunshine state for some warmth, sun and flowers.  Although spring break varies throughout the country, it is typically the busiest during mid-March.  If Easter happens to be in March as well, this can really cause a huge increase in crowds.  Many smaller schools provide a four-day weekend giving even more families a chance to head down for a Disney World vacation.  Spring break is a wonderful time to head down to the magic as the weather is warming up and the summer rains haven’t started yet so don’t be scared away but go in with a plan as you head to the Walt Disney World resort.

Summer Months

Just like spring break, the summer months bring in lots of families as they celebrate another school year in the books.  Overall summer brings in higher crowds than normal to the Disney park; however, there are stretches within summer that can have higher and lower crowds.  4th of July brings in extremely high crowds where as early June and late August brings lower crowds as not everyone is out of school and many have started school and families don’t want to pull kids out of school at the beginning of the year.  We will have to see what 2022 summer crowds look like and if we will see a return to normal summer crowds or if they will remain lower at the Walt Disney World resort.  The heat and humidity has started to scare some travelers off lately but we will have to wait and see if that pattern continues moving forward to see how many book a Disney trip this coming summer.

Halloween

One of the favorite times for many to visit Walt Disney World is during the fall.  As with everything, Disney does a fantastic job decorating and celebrating Halloween.  From the outstanding decorations at Magic Kingdom to EPCOT”s Wine and Food Festival there is so much to take in Disney.  Fans love the unique celebrations such as Boo Bash that come along with Halloween.   Even though Boo Bash was different from what we had previously experienced in Magic Kingdom, fans have had a great time dressing up again in their favorite costumes, enjoying cavalcades, riding rides and having a fantastic time.  If you are wanting to avoid this time, check out when these special events are happening in Magic Kingdom or other parks.

December

Along with Halloween being a favorite time to visit Disney World, December and the holiday season is a top choice for many when it comes to planning a Disney World vacation.  We are thrilled that so many of what makes the holiday season special at Disney World is returning for 2021.  In EPCOT, Guests will once again be able to enjoy the beauty and magic of the Candlelight Processional.  This magical show tells the story of Christmas with talented cast members and special narrators.  In Animal Kingdom, Disney announced that the beloved puppets will be returning.  The Merry Menagerie will once again bring the artisan-sculpted animal puppets including reindeer, foxes and polar bears to Guests.  Santa will also be seeing Guests at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios as well as Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The magic of the season is coming to Magic Kingdom in full force as Disney Very Merriest After Hours will be coming on select evenings.  Guests will be able to celebrate the season with character sightings, themed fireworks and new tasty treats and so much more!  We can’t wait for all the magic of the season to come this year and we are sure the crowds will be back as well as everyone will want to celebrate once again with a Disney World trip.

RunDisney Events

A time throughout the year that brings it higher crowds that many might not know about is runDisney events.  Throughout the year, Disney offers running events and with these events Disney fans and running fans come in down in large numbers.  The first event is Marathon Weekend which this coming year will take place January 5th to 9th.  Disney Princess Weekend is February 24th to 27th and new this year is runDisney Springtime Surprise weekend which will be coming March 31st to April 3rd.  Runners from all over come to these events so if you happen to be down during these race weekends, make sure you have those park reservations and dining reservations ready to go.  Runners love to eat and celebrate their accomplishments in Magic Kingdom.  Know that even though the runners will show up in large numbers, they also head out early because Disney races start super early in the morning.

These are the busiest times of the year in Walt Disney World.  If you are looking to avoid large crowds, consider avoiding these times.  If you do happen to be down during a high crowd time, make sure you have a plan and you will still have a magical Disney World vacation.

About Jennifer Retzlaff

My name is Jennifer Retzlaff and I became a lifelong Disney fan during my first trip to Walt Disney World in 6th grade. From that moment, Disney became a big part of my life. I live in Iowa with my husband and two kids who are growing up too quickly for my liking. I started introducing my love for Disney early to my family with a Disney honeymoon and then trips when our youngest of 18 months. Since then, our family has been to Walt Disney World over five times and we continue to plan and dream for the next trip. I love the magic that Disney brings to people through the theme parks, cruises, adventures and movies they create. As a teacher, I try to bring that magic into my classroom to help kids believe that “If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It.” I recently reached a dream of mine as I joined Magic Vacation Planner as a personal travel advisor. With this team, I can now help others plan magical vacations. As a passionate writer, I also have my own blog at magicalvacationsbyjen which is also where you can follow me on instagram for trip reviews along with tips and tricks for your next magical vacation.
