Batman Forever (1995), the neon-soaked, off-the-wall follow-up to Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), is finally getting its long-rumored director’s cut.
It has been revealed that the late director Joel Schumacher’s extended version of the film—known by fans as the “Schumacher Cut”—is getting a rare screening in L.A. on May 29.
The special screening event is presumably being held to honor the movie’s 30th anniversary on June 16, although it also comes two months after the passing of actor Val Kilmer, who, of course, portrayed Bruce Wayne/Batman in the film, replacing Michael Keaton.
The cut is expected to be 26 minutes longer than the theatrical release and dives deeper into Bruce Wayne’s guilt and psychological trauma, giving the story a darker, more introspective tone than the one most viewers remember. CineFile Video describes the cut as “a darker, moodier version of the 1995 film you’ve never seen on the big screen.”

It also includes entire scenes that were cut from the original release—some of which have already made the rounds online in bootleg form over the years.
One of the most talked-about moments involves Bruce (Kilmer) confronting a giant bat creature in the Batcave, a sequence that better connects the character’s internal struggle to his childhood fears.
While there’s no word yet on whether the Batman Forever Schumacher Cut will stream after its limited theatrical run, fans who’ve been pushing for its release—especially after the success of Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League in 2021—will be thrilled to finally see a more complete version of Val Kilmer’s time as the iconic Gotham City Caped Crusader.

Batman Forever stars Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent/Two-Face, Jim Carrey as Edward Nygma/The Riddler, Nicole Kidman as Dr. Chase Meridian, and Chris O’Donnell as Dick Grayson/Robin.
