Disney Accidentally Leaks Opening Date for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Walt Disney World’s magical 50th-anniversary celebration is in full swing down at the Florida Resort and with it the excitement of new experiences.

From Disney Enchantment and the returning Festival of Fantasy parade at Magic Kingdom, to Beacons of Magic and beautiful golden Fab 5o Character Collection sculptures, Guests have had a lot to look forward to on their next Disney World vacation.

And joining the brand new nighttime show Harmonious at EPCOT is the brand-new Marvel Studios coaster — Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind!

The new indoor rollercoaster will feature the popular Marvel characters in an all-new, spinning coaster that brings the comedy and story to life in a thrilling experience.

This will be the second Guardians of the Galaxy-themed attraction at Disney Parks in the U.S., the first being Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! at Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort.

Well, Marvel fans and Disney Guests assemble – the waiting is almost over!

Cosmic Rewind had previously been revealed to be launching in 2022, but a specific opening date had yet to be announced.

Today, February 22, it seems Disney had an accidental leak of the debut of Cosmic Rewind at Walt Disney World.

Geoff Morrell, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Disney, shared a photo from inside the Cosmic Rewind attraction, revealing that the ride is “like no other ride you’ve ever been on”:

Just another day at the office–got to “test ride” the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at @WaltDisneyWorld  EPCOT. Walt Disney Imagineers designed this one like no other ride you’ve ever been on. Have to ride it to believe it! Check it out starting Memorial Day weekend!

The biggest reveal was that the ride will be opening on Memorial Weekend in 2022! This is the first indication we’ve had of when the ride will be opening to Disney Guests at EPCOT, but it seems this was a mistake to reveal this so early.

The Tweet was immediately deleted, which made it seem like an accidental leak. In 2020, Morrell was appointed Executive Vice President of Communications and Advocacy at BP. In December 2021, it was announced that Morrell would be leaving BP to serve as Disney’s Chief Corporate Affairs Officer. Morrell transitioned into his role with the Walt Disney Company only in January this year.

Within the hour, Morrell had reshared the tweet with the same photo, just without the date reveal:

Just another day at the office–got to “test ride” the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind roller coaster at @WaltDisneyWorld  EPCOT. Walt Disney Imagineers deigned this one like no other ride you’ve ever been on. Have to ride it to believe it! Coming soon!

We’ll have to see what comes of this reveal and whether Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will open Memorial Weekend.

In the meantime, Guests can enjoy the magic of Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks.

Walt Disney World describes the new coaster as:

An Extraterrestrial Escapade
Begin your adventure by touring the Galaxarium—a planetarium-like exhibition showcasing the similarities and differences between Xandar and Earth’s galaxies. You’ll even get to discover some of the incredible wonders of Xandar and learn about their technology.

Just as you are about to reach the culmination of the tour, everything goes sideways, and you are called into action to help the Guardians of the Galaxy. Are you ready to rock out on an awesome quest across the cosmos to save the galaxy? It’s all up to you!

This family-friendly attraction features the first ever reverse-launch on a Disney coaster and is one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world! A new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering—this coaster rotates 360 degrees so you can focus on the action!
