Some Disney guests are experiencing some unexpected changes this week.
At Walt Disney World, months of careful planning can unravel in moments. Rides close without warning, entertainment vanishes from schedules, and carefully plotted itineraries are rewritten overnight. The causes vary — from weather to maintenance problems — but the impact is the same: guests caught off guard in a place built on predictability.

In recent years, even extraordinary incidents have altered vacations. Haunted Mansion closed abruptly in 2024 after an oil spill, shutting down part of Magic Kingdom. That same year, a sewage leak forced the closure of Liberty Square and Frontierland. A year earlier, an even more unusual disruption arrived when a black bear was found inside Magic Kingdom, temporarily shutting areas of the park until the animal was safely removed.
Such disruptions extend well beyond the parks. Disney Cruise Line, which operates ships across the globe, is particularly susceptible to last-minute changes. At sea, conditions are volatile, and shifts in weather or port operations can instantly dismantle a scheduled voyage. Often, the only warning comes in the form of a typed notice slipped under a stateroom door.
Disney Treasure Voyage Altered
That exact scenario played out this week aboard the Disney Treasure. Guests learned that Tropical Storm Melissa, moving toward the Caribbean and expected to intensify into a hurricane, would force a dramatic reworking of their itinerary.
In a letter distributed onboard and later shared on Reddit, Disney Cruise Line informed travelers: “We have been closely monitoring the storm’s forecasted track. Due to the possible impacts in the Caribbean, we have made the decision to change your itinerary. Instead of visiting Tortola and St. Thomas, you will now visit Cozumel, Mexico on Tuesday (Day 4) and an additional Castaway Cay call on Thursday (Day 5).”
The letter added, “We appreciate your understanding regarding this necessary itinerary change. The safety and well-being of our guests and crew members is our highest priority.”
The decision instantly reshaped thousands of vacations, underscoring the fragility of even the most elaborate Disney experiences. For some guests, the change may mean disappointment at missing the Virgin Islands. For others, the addition of Cozumel and Castaway Cay could soften the blow.
Broader Cruise Line Challenges
This is far from the first disruption for Disney Cruise Line. Earlier in the year, the company announced it would withdraw from Australia after one final season, a move that disappointed fans eager for a permanent international presence.

Other voyages have faced their own difficulties. Plumbing issues left some staterooms flooded, with guests reporting strong odors. Social media posts have also surfaced about bed bug complaints, sparking further frustration among passengers.
Adding to the turbulence, Disney recently postponed the highly anticipated maiden voyage of the Disney Adventure, originally set to launch from Singapore in December 2025. That debut has now been pushed into 2026, raising questions about the ship’s readiness.
