Secret Height Tests and AR: Inside the Making of Disney World’s New Lands

Walt Disney Imagineering has released a new episode of its We Call It Imagineering documentary series, giving fans a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the massive expansions coming to Walt Disney World. The latest episode focuses on “parkitecture”—the art of creating believable, immersive environments that feel completely natural to their surroundings.

From secretive sightline tests in Magic Kingdom to weathering materials in the Florida sun, Imagineering is pulling out all the stops to ensure Piston Peak, Villains Land, Monstropolis, and the Tropical Americas are perfectly executed.

Secret Sightline Tests for Piston Peak and Villains Land

The most revealing segment centers on Magic Kingdom, where Imagineers are tackling the complex logistics of designing Piston Peak National Park—the upcoming Cars-themed land—and the highly anticipated Villains Land. To ensure these massive new structures don’t ruin the carefully curated views of the existing park, the team relies on rigorous physical height testing.

Imagineers hoisted massive visual markers into the sky to match the exact proposed peak elevations of the new structures. The project team then fanned out across Magic Kingdom to see if the peaks were visible from other immersive environments. The goal is strict visual isolation; a guest strolling through Liberty Square shouldn’t be able to spot the rocky mountains of a Cars attraction or the looming spires of a villainous fortress.

The video candidly revealed that the initial height test for Piston Peak, conducted over a year ago, was actually a failure. Imagineers realized that several planned elevations were simply too high and threatened to bleed into neighboring lands. Rather than accepting the visual intrusion, the team went back to the drawing board and significantly shortened the structures. A recent follow-up test confirmed that the adjusted heights now align correctly with adjacent attractions, such as the Haunted Mansion. The scale of Villains Land is also being carefully calibrated using these tests to ensure the transition between the two distinct areas feels completely seamless.

Building Monstropolis from the Movies

Over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the upcoming Monsters, Inc. expansion demands a completely different architectural approach. Instead of natural rockwork, Monstropolis requires Imagineers to build a fully functioning, monster-sized city from the ground up.

Rather than just recreating background buildings from the Pixar films, the creative team is analyzing how a city designed by monsters would function in the real world. Because monsters come in drastically different sizes, the land’s architecture will reflect this diversity with doorways of varying scales. Standard architectural elements are getting a “monster-fied” overhaul, featuring integrated horns and teeth on support columns. The immersion even extends to the soundscape, with the audio of a bustling monster nightclub designed to echo out of local storm drains.

A Sample Yard for Tropical Americas

The Tropical Americas land at Disney’s Animal Kingdom relies on rustic, natural textures to bring Encanto and Indiana Jones to life. To achieve an authentically weathered look, Imagineers built a dedicated “sample yard” long before construction began.

The team leaves various materials exposed to the harsh Central Florida sun and relentless rain to see exactly how they age, fade, and warp. By studying how the textures hold up under real outdoor conditions, the team can refine the environment before installation. Imagineers are also using classic forced-perspective techniques to make the Encanto Casita appear massive along guest pathways.

Next-Generation Tools and Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge

While physical sample yards prove that traditional techniques remain vital, Imagineering is also utilizing next-generation technology. Builders are now using augmented reality (AR) headsets that project a highly detailed 3D digital model of a finished space directly onto an active construction site.
