In fact, Gerber has extended his overall deal with the Walt Disney Company and will develop the new spinoff series for Disney Branded Television. Disney Junior first debuted the animated television movie Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess ten years ago on Friday, November 18, 2012.
The film, which follows a young village girl as she adjusts to her new life after her mother marries the King of the fantasy kingdom, Enchancia, was an instant hit with audiences ages two to five. However, due to its catchy soundtrack, the star-studded cast (including Ariel Winter, Sara Ramirez, Travis Willingham, Wayne Brady, and Tim Gunn), and its regular cameos of classic Disney Princesses, Sofia the First also gained a more mature following.

Moreover, the Disney Junior program spanned four Emmy award-winning seasons and additionally inspired the spinoff series Elena of Avalor (2016). Elena explores the Latin America-inspired kingdom of Avalor, the birthplace of Sofia’s signature amulet which grants her special powers and the ability to summon other princesses within the show.
After finding out the amulet has trapped Crown Princess Elena for decades, Princess Sofia frees Elena and rescues Avalor from the clutches of the evil sorceress Shuriki with the help of her step-siblings and animal friends. Elena’s series continues from there, highlighting her own journey as she comes into power at age 16.

Sources state that the show will allegedly center on other royal children from the kingdoms within the universe at Sofia’s own school for aristocratic heirs, Royal Prep Academy. Disney has yet to release if these will be familiar characters based on Sofia’s royal friends, or a new cast of princes and princesses taught by Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty (1959).
You can watch Sofia the First at home with an active Disney+ subscription to catch up before the new series premieres. Additionally, Disney Junior will air special releases of Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess this weekend to celebrate its ten-year anniversary.
