For years, the T-65B X-wing Starfighter stood guard outside Hyperspace Mountain in Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland—a static but striking nod to a galaxy far, far away. Now, it’s gone.
Its departure is the latest shift in a park that is both celebrating its legacy and reinventing itself. While Disneyland and Walt Disney World continue to build upon the immersive Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Hong Kong Disneyland appears to be recalibrating its relationship with the franchise.
‘Star Wars’ Presence Fades in Tomorrowland
Hong Kong Disneyland has officially removed the X-wing fighter that once anchored the Tomorrowland Starport. The ship, a full-scale replica of the iconic Rebel vehicle, was quietly dismantled last month, following a cryptic message from Hong Kong Disneyland Ambassadors. In a social media post, they posed in front of the starfighter, writing that it would “soon depart for a new mission.”
While the message struck fans as playful, it also sparked speculation. Some wondered whether the popular Hyperspace Mountain overlay could be the next to go. The same rumor has circulated at Disneyland Paris, where many have called for a reversion to the original theme.
So far, Disney has not commented on the decision. But it comes amid minor but noticeable changes in the area: widened lanes for Disney Premier Access guests, the introduction of a new shaded rest space, and the removal of the Rebel Hangar artwork that once tied the theming together.
A Broader Transformation Ahead
The X-wing’s exit doesn’t stand alone. Hong Kong Disneyland is currently in the midst of its most significant growth since opening in 2005. Tomorrowland is set to welcome a new Spider‑Man attraction, joining the existing Iron Man and Ant‑Man rides in the Stark Expo area.
Another addition is a first-of-its-kind Pixar Entertainment Experience, planned for the space between Toy Story Land and World of Frozen. Disney says the new offering will bring guests into the worlds of beloved Pixar films through immersive entertainment, though specific details remain under wraps.
This month also marks the beginning of the park’s 20th anniversary. The celebration, dubbed “The Most Magical Party of All,” features new entertainment offerings, including a castle-stage show, the “Friendtastic!” parade with more than 100 performers, upgraded fireworks, exclusive merchandise, and themed food and beverages.
