Coming to theaters this fall is a movie that very few people (if any) have asked for…

The Marvels Movie

The Marvels (2023) is a quasi-sequel to Captain Marvel (2019), WandaVision (2021), and Ms. Marvel (2022).

It will be coming to theaters on November 10 and follows Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Ms. Marvel / Kamala Khan ( Iman Vellani ) in an adventure where their superpowers become intertwined.

Will The Marvels Be a Box Office Bomb?

On X (formerly) Twitter, The Marvels has already received a mixed reaction and a lukewarm response from the comic book and MCU fan base. Will The Marvels be a box office bomb?

In addition to the polarizing Brie Larson, who many Marvel comic fans dislike, the movie centers around two other lesser-known superheroes whose stories require viewers to watch multiple Disney Plus tv shows to understand the characters, their powers, and their backstories.

In addition, the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe films, such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), have yet to perform to levels of previous entries in the series. Nevertheless, Disney and Marvel Studios are pushing ahead on their plans to release The Marvels and roll the dice that it will turn a profit.

As of September 12, Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for the movie and the official IMAX poster. The Marvels trailer (shown below) is a short teaser compared to the previous trailer but seems to focus more on the film’s action than a light-hearted comedy. The nearly 40-second spot shows the three main superheroes and Samuel L. Jackson reprising his role as Nick Fury.

The IMAX poster promoting the superhero movie features the three main characters with intense expressions, signaling they are ready for action.

Although it remains to be seen what exactly the new Marvel film will offer or how it will perform, the signs aren’t good. So will The Marvels be a box office bomb? Maybe.

Disney has had a bad string of box office failures over the past year, and it’s unlikely that this movie will be enough to dig them out of that hole. But stranger things have happened both in Disney and in the MCU.

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
