Disney World Cuts Free Feature After 13 Years, Immediately Removes Guests

For more than a decade, Walt Disney World has relied on the My Disney Experience app to keep vacations running smoothly. It’s the central hub for booking dining reservations, securing Lightning Lanes, checking wait times, and managing family plans.

But now, after 13 years of offering a familiar feature for free, Disney has suddenly pulled the plug—and guests are already feeling the sting.

A Sudden Shift in the App

Guests logging into the My Disney Experience app this week were hit with an unexpected pop-up. It read: “Your Family & Friends List is unavailable in the My Disney Experience app at this time. Please manage your Family & Friends List via our website.”

With that single alert, the option to add or manage friends and family directly in the app disappeared. For years, this tool allowed groups to plan together seamlessly, ensuring everyone was linked for dining reservations, Lightning Lane selections, and other potential reservations. Now, that convenience is gone.

What This Means for Guests

The removal doesn’t just mean extra steps—it can derail vacation planning. Families who relied on the app while walking through the parks now have to pivot to a web browser, a slower and less user-friendly option when you’re standing in a crowded queue or racing to grab a reservation.

Some guests have taken to social media to voice their frustrations, pointing out that Disney seems to be scaling back instead of improving technology that’s already known for glitches. After 13 years of offering the feature in-app, its sudden disappearance feels like a step backward.

Why Disney Made the Change

Disney hasn’t clarified whether this is temporary or permanent. The company often updates My Disney Experience to fix bugs or streamline systems, and earlier this year they rolled out changes to the dining reservation process. Still, the timing of this removal has left many questioning the direction of Disney’s digital tools.

By pushing guests to the website, Disney may be aiming to reduce app crashes or lighten server strain, but the trade-off leaves everyday visitors with more frustration than convenience.

Immediate Impact

For now, anyone who wants to add or adjust their Family & Friends list must head to the Disney website. That means if your cousin surprises you by flying in for a day at Magic Kingdom, you can’t just link them in-app—you’ll need to step aside, open a browser, and hope the website loads quickly.

It’s a clunky workaround at best, and at worst it means missed reservations, missed Lightning Lane bookings, and unhappy guests. Disney has always marketed the My Disney Experience app as the all-in-one vacation companion, but this latest cut leaves it feeling incomplete.

Moving Forward

Fans are now left wondering: is this the beginning of a larger shift? Will other features vanish from the app in favor of website management, or is this just a temporary setback as Disney works behind the scenes?

One thing’s clear: after 13 years of offering this free and essential tool, Disney’s decision to remove it without warning has left guests scrambling. The company may frame it as a small change, but for families who rely on seamless planning, it’s a big deal.

Somebody in WDW better wake up. We have been going to WDW for 50 years but no more with the witless changes to the attractions, lands and treatment of Pass holders.
