Walt Disney World Resort guests are reportedly abusing a loophole to bring selfie sticks and other filming devices into the Central Florida theme parks. This trend comes nine years after Disney initially banned them in 2015, citing safety issues on attractions and throughout Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

The official Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules prohibit guests from bringing “selfie sticks,” “hand-held extension poles for cameras or mobile devices,” and “tripods or monopod stands that cannot fit inside a standard backpack or that extend over 6′” into the Central Florida Disney parks. However, guests can bring tripods or monopods that fit inside a standard backpack and extend less than six feet.

According to recent reports, Disney Park guests are abusing this rule to sneak selfie stick-like monopods into Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Disney Parks fans recently discussed the phenomenon on Reddit.

“I’ve seen several people with selfie sticks this trip, even ones with stands and them having 5+ minute photo shoots of identical shots on a timer,” u/liambrazier began. “I thought these things were banned.”

“They have been exploiting a loophole lately where monopods are ok but selfie sticks are not,” u/nevets4333 replied. “I expect the rule to be updated before too long because the monopods are being used as selfie sticks.”

“A lot of people are bringing monopods and collapsible tripods,” u/ebockelman agreed. “Monopods are especially easy to confuse with a selfie stick if you aren’t looking closely.”

Other Disney Park guests said they’ve seen families with unmistakable selfie sticks, but the new security scanners prevent security cast members from catching them because there are no longer manual bag check stations.

“Now that all bags aren’t physically check the sticks get through and [cast members] don’t want to stop someone once they are in,” u/jodi4869 wrote.

“A family almost hit me in EPCOT yesterday as they popped out their selfie stick as soon as I was walking by,” said u/worldstopkerion. “I had to jump to the right to avoid getting hit.”

Selfie sticks and other similar filming devices are banned because they pose a safety risk in crowded walkways and on attractions. They could impede a ride’s path or strike another guest if dropped.
