After 36 years of operation, Walt Disney World Resort has officially begun a major construction project at the iconic Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The luxurious Disney Resort hotel is undergoing a significant transformation with the commencement of renovations in the lobby area, marking a shift in the resort’s aesthetic. The project, which was teased by Disney earlier this month, promises to blend the hotel’s classic Victorian charm with modern enhancements.
A major highlight of the renovation is the addition of the resort’s first lobby bar. Inspired by the resort’s iconic ornate golden birdcage, the new bar will feature stained glass, brass accents, and intricate woodwork, with birds displayed in stained glass and murals throughout the atrium. The architecture of the atrium will largely remain intact, preserving the Victorian feel guests know and love. Disney has promised that updated furnishings and custom carpeting will give the space a modern touch without sacrificing its theme. The grand piano and Victorian cage-style elevator will continue to be centerpieces of the lobby.
Just days after Walt Disney World Resort shared concept art for the lobby reimagining, construction walls began to appear in the heart of the Grand Floridian’s atrium. According to BlogMickey, beige construction walls now block access to the golden birdcage and surrounding areas of the lobby, with photos showing little progress in the area behind the walls. The floors and carpets appear unchanged, with only some visible wood and cement wall reinforcements. The renovations are in the early stages, and it’s unclear whether Disney will block guests from viewing the work from upper floors in the coming months.
This renovation is expected to continue through November 2025, impacting some parts of the Deluxe Disney Resort hotel experience. For example, Walt Disney World Resort has already canceled this year’s annual Gingerbread House display due to expected congestion in the lobby area.
However, the annual Easter Egg display will remain on view until at least April 20, 2025, giving guests a chance to enjoy some seasonal decorations. Many areas of the Disney Resort, including the pools, dining locations, Monorail station, and gift shops, will remain unaffected by the ongoing construction.
Disney has yet to announce a specific opening date for the bar or the newly designed lobby area. Walt Disney World Resort guests will have to stay tuned for further updates on this exciting transformation at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
