Walt Disney World Resort’s iconic Haunted Mansion attraction is undergoing some unexpected changes after 53 years of scaring and delighting guests. Recently, construction walls appeared around the exterior of the Liberty Square ride.
The Haunted Mansion has been a staple of Walt Disney World Resort since Magic Kingdom Park first opened on October 1, 1971, following Disneyland Park’s version, which debuted in 1969. Over the years, the attraction has inspired versions in Disney parks around the world, from Tokyo Disneyland’s ride of the same name to the Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris and the Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland.
Unlike most of Walt Disney World Resort’s major attraction refurbishments, which are typically announced ahead of time, the closure of a portion of the Haunted Mansion has caught guests by surprise. According to WDWMagic, construction walls are now blocking the area surrounding the hearse and carriage display near the ride’s entrance.
The brown construction walls are short, hinting that this is a relatively minor refurbishment, likely limited to concrete work. For larger projects, Disney typically erects taller walls to conceal anything deemed “not safe for magic.”
While guests can still experience the Haunted Mansion itself, the attraction’s exterior is clearly in the midst of some maintenance work. The queue area remains largely unaffected by the construction, meaning that the disruption should not significantly impact the overall guest experience. However, as of now, Walt Disney World Resort has not officially confirmed an end date for this refurbishment.
This move comes shortly after Disneyland Resort completed its own Haunted Mansion upgrades, including a revamped queue, plaza area, and gift shop. The New Orleans Square updates were well-received, though the new Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond merchandise shop has sparked mixed reviews. Guests have criticized the exterior appearance of the new store, with some comparing it to a Home Depot shed. Additionally, there was backlash over the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) art inside the store, leading to a quick removal of the controversial decorations.
