The American treasure herself, Dolly Parton, may not hold the title that you think she does at her award-winning theme park, Dollywood.
Dolly Parton, a name synonymous with rhinestone-studded suits and heartfelt country ballads, boasts a career as rich and vibrant as the Tennessee hills she calls home. Born in 1946 into a close-knit family in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, Dolly’s musical talent blossomed early. By the age of ten, she was captivating audiences on local television and radio shows, laying the foundation for her future stardom.
Parton’s big break arrived in 1967 when she joined Porter Wagoner’s television program. This fruitful partnership propelled her onto the national stage, resulting in a string of country chart hits. “Jolene,” released in 1973, solidified her place as a country music icon and remains one of her most enduring anthems.
The 1970s and 80s witnessed Dolly’s crossover into mainstream pop. Hits like “Here You Come Again” and “9 to 5” resonated with a wider audience, establishing her as a multi-genre powerhouse. Notably, her duet with Kenny Rogers, “Islands in the Stream,” cemented her status as a global phenomenon.
Beyond music, Dolly’s talents extend to the silver screen. Her film career took off in 1980 with the critically acclaimed “9 to 5,” where she co-starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Her captivating charisma and powerful vocals not only propelled the film’s success but also garnered her widespread acclaim. Subsequent roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias showcased her versatility, allowing her to seamlessly navigate comedic and dramatic characters.
Dolly’s creative spirit extends far beyond music and film. A prolific songwriter, she has penned over 3,000 songs, including the timeless classic “I Will Always Love You,” famously covered by Whitney Houston. Philanthropy is another facet of her remarkable life. The Imagination Library, established in 1995, sends free books to underprivileged children, fostering a love of reading and promoting literacy. To date, the program has distributed over 150 million books, a testament to Dolly’s unwavering commitment to giving back.
Dolly Parton Dreamed Up Dollywood
In 1986, Dolly realized a lifelong dream with the opening of Dollywood, a theme park nestled in the heart of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Originally known as Rebel Railroad, the park underwent a significant transformation under Dolly’s vision. More than just a theme park, Dollywood serves as a celebration of Smoky Mountain heritage and culture, offering thrilling rides, live entertainment, and traditional crafts experiences to over three million visitors annually.
Dollywood’s success story doesn’t end there. Splash Country, a water park filled with exhilarating slides and refreshing water features, has become a popular extension of the Dollywood experience. Additionally, DreamMore Resort and Spa offers guests luxurious accommodations and priority park access, creating a truly immersive Smoky Mountain getaway.
Dollywood’s journey under Dolly’s leadership has been one of continuous evolution. A recent half-billion-dollar investment has ushered in a new era of excitement. The luxurious HeartSong Lodge & Resort reflects Dolly’s love for the Smokies, providing guests with breathtaking mountain views and family-friendly amenities.
Another centerpiece of this transformation is The Dolly Parton Experience, a state-of-the-art exhibit that takes visitors on a captivating journey through Dolly’s life story, from her humble beginnings to her meteoric rise to fame. Replacing the former Chasing Rainbows museum, this immersive experience leaves a lasting impression, often evoking tears of joy and inspiration.
Thrill-seekers rejoice!
Dollywood boasts a diverse selection of rides, catering to all levels of adrenaline. Nine roller coasters, including the record-breaking Big Bear Mountain – a $25 million masterpiece inspired by the Smokies and Dolly’s own roots – promise heart-pounding adventures. The fan-favorite Lightning Rod, a revamped wooden coaster renowned for its lightning-fast speeds, further adds to the park’s exhilarating offerings. With over 50 attractions in total, Dollywood ensures there’s something for everyone, from families with young children to adventure enthusiasts.
For those seeking a luxurious stay nestled within the Smoky Mountains, Dollywood offers two on-site resorts. HeartSong Lodge & Resort, the newest addition, features spacious accommodations with a focus on family-friendly amenities and stunning mountain vistas. DreamMore Resort and Spa, recently revamped with a touch of Dolly’s signature style, provides guests with priority access to the park and a taste of renowned Parton hospitality.
Dollywood’s reputation for exceptional guest experiences transcends national borders.
A recent survey by Radical Storage revealed a fascinating trend in American vacation preferences with a significant portion prioritizing domestic escapes and staycations. Interestingly, a study by InsureandGo awarded Dollywood a phenomenal “Come Back” score of 94 out of 100, placing it at the top globally. This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the unique bond Dollywood fosters with its guests.
And now, the accolades keep rolling in. Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Awards have named Dollywood the No. 1 theme park in the United States, surpassing industry giants like Disney World. This recognition signifies a remarkable achievement for Dollywood and underscores its unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences.
Dollywood’s triumph extends beyond the US market, securing a coveted spot on the prestigious Travelers’ Choice Top 25 Worldwide Amusement Parks list, ranking an impressive No. 10. This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy as Dollywood stands as the sole North American representative within the international top 10, further solidifying its position as a global leader in the theme park industry.
Dolly Parton, Dollywood’s iconic founder, expressed her heartfelt delight at the recognition bestowed upon the theme park. In a statement, she remarked, “I’m so thrilled about what our guests say about what we’re doing at Dollywood. I truly wanted Dollywood to be a place where people would be excited to visit because of the warmth and hospitality of the hosts working there and because of the natural beauty God blessed us with in the Great Smoky Mountains.”
From her prolific musical career to her philanthropic endeavors and visionary leadership in the theme park industry, Dolly Parton’s legacy continues to inspire. Dollywood, a testament to her love for her roots and unwavering dedication to creating lasting memories, stands as a shining example of Southern hospitality and family fun in the heart of the Smoky Mountains.
But what is Dolly Parton’s role at Dollywood?
Dolly Parton Takes on New Title at Dollywood
After a recent interview with CBS Mornings, Dolly was discussing how she get’s excited when she writes a good lyric, and Dollywood shared the interview clip, calling Dolly their Dreamer-In-Cheif.

Parton has always been a massive dreamer, and we can still see the 78-year-old carry out her dreams in all of her endeavors.
Country music legend Dolly Parton may have retired from touring, but her creative spirit remains as vibrant as ever. A diverse array of upcoming projects exemplifies her unwavering dedication to her craft and her boundless creative energy.
In November, Parton embarks on a journey of self-discovery with the release of her new album, “Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables.” This project goes beyond mere music; it delves into Parton’s family history, serving as a heartfelt exploration of the wellspring of inspiration that has fueled her remarkable career. A captivating four-part documentary series will accompany the album, offering fans an intimate look into Parton’s formative years and the enduring influence of her family.
Parton’s innovative spirit shines brightly in “Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs in Symphony.” This groundbreaking live production transcends the traditional concert experience. A full orchestra will breathe new life into Parton’s iconic hits, while captivating visuals featuring Parton herself will grace the stage. This immersive format allows audiences to connect with her music and stories in a fresh and captivating way, even in her absence.
Parton’s creativity extends far beyond the realm of music. She collaborates with her sister Rachel on a forthcoming cookbook titled “Good Lookin’ Cookin’.” This playful title, a nod to the legendary Hank Williams, hints at the book’s delightful content. “Good Lookin’ Cookin'” promises to be a treasure trove of cherished family recipes and festive holiday menus, offering fans a glimpse into Parton’s love for good food and the traditions she holds dear.
Parton ventures into a new creative space with the launch of her first wine collection, aptly named “Dolly Wines.” This exciting project marks a collaboration between Parton Family Cellars and Accolade Wines, a leading global wine company. This venture allows Parton to share her passion for quality and her appreciation for the finer things in life with a whole new audience.
Parton’s reach isn’t limited to music and food. She is also expanding her Pirate’s Voyage Dinner and Show restaurant to Florida. Scheduled to open in 2025, the new 60,000-square-foot indoor theater will feature over 1,000 seats and a “four-course pirate’s feast,” promising a thrilling and delicious experience for audiences of all ages.
Dolly Parton’s upcoming projects showcase a true creative force. From unearthing her musical roots to reimagining her music and venturing into new endeavors like wine and dining, Parton continues to inspire with her relentless creativity and dedication to bringing joy to her fans.
That being said, according to Dollywood, Parton is not the CEO of the park, but rather, Dolly is the Dreamer in Chief for Dollywood.
“When I was growing up here in the Great Smoky Mountains, we used to come every now and then down to this area,” Parton told USA TODAY in an interview at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa in Pigeon Forge. “When it was the county fair, we’d come to town, and I used to think if I make it big, if I get rich like I was dreaming I might, that I’d love to do something special, to come back home and build a park of my own.”
Dollywood is her dream come true.
“And I’m still dreaming and it’s still coming true.”
While most CEO’s and theme park owners would want the official title, for Dolly, Dreamer-In-Cheif sounds just right.
While Parton may be dreaming, Dollywood has hit the harsh grounds of reality as of late. There were 11 car burglaries reported, one guest had a cardiac arrest in the park, and there was a last-minute park shutdown due to weather, all within the last few months.
