Guests at EPCOT may have already noticed subtle changes happening around Spaceship Earth as the iconic attraction prepares for a lengthy refurbishment.
On August 6, our friends at Inside the Magic reported that crews replaced the Eastern-side panels on the Project Tomorrow building attached to Spaceship Earth. This structure isn’t the geodesic sphere itself, but it houses the ride’s post-show area and the recently opened adults-only GEO-82 lounge. The old, faded white panels were swapped for a reflective metallic silver finish, giving the building a brighter, more modern appearance.

By August 13, BlogMickey reported that the renovation had expanded to the Western side of the building. The new silver panels now cover nearly half of that side, and most of the Western side is expected to be updated. At this stage, it doesn’t appear that crews will alter the actual geodesic sphere of Spaceship Earth during this exterior refresh.
Walt Disney World Resort has not issued a statement about the updates. The timing coincides with the attraction’s planned refurbishment, set to begin on August 25, but Disney has not revealed any details about the full extent of that work. A reopening date has yet to be announced.

Spaceship Earth was originally scheduled for a multi-year reimagining in 2021 as part of Walt Disney World Resort’s 50th anniversary. Like many projects across the Disney parks, it was delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The slow-moving attraction takes guests through key advancements in human history, from cave drawings to modern computers, highlighting how people have communicated across the centuries. At the end of the ride, visitors can use an interactive screen to explore their own visions of a technologically advanced future.

Spaceship Earth will close for refurbishment on August 25. Walt Disney World Resort has not shared when the attraction will reopen.
