“Shut up!” (As Princess Mia would say).

It seems the whole world is waiting for Disney, Anne Hathaway, and Dame Julie Andrews to confirm The Princess Diaries 3.

And while we speculate about what comes next for Princess Mia, Queen Clarisse, and Genovia, it seems Julie Andrews is making an impact on the hit Apple TV comedy show Ted Lasso.

It has been 20 years (yes, 20 years) since Mia Thermopolis (a.k.a Anne Hathaway a.k.a. Princess of Genovia, and now Queen of Genovia) was introduced to fans, and 15 years since the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) hit our screens, but that doesn’t stop us theorizing over what comes next for Mia and Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews).

The fairytale romantic comedy was Andrews’ first Disney movie since the classic Mary Poppins (1964) – co-starring Dick Van Dyke as Bert – for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

And as we anxiously await updates on The Princess Diaries 3, it seems we’re not alone. It looks as if the AFC Richmond coaching team from the hit comedy Ted Lasso is equally as anxious, with Trent Crimm (James Lance) and Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) voicing their love for the iconic Disney movies – and Julie Andrews herself.

In an unexpected turn for the Jason Sudeikis television show, Dame Julie Andrews made her debut as a topic of conversation between Roy Kent, Ted Lasso, Trent Crimm, and Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt).

In Season 3, Episode 3, titled “4-5-1,” the AFC Richmond soccer coaches discuss their favorite Julie Andrews roles in an amusing scene that led to Disney fans realizing they had a lot in common with Brett Goldstein’s tough Roy Kent.

Andrews’ vast and beloved set of roles was debated, from Maria in The Sound of Music (1965) and Mary Poppins to the unmatched Clarisse Renaldi, Queen of Genovia. Trent’s royal answer prompts Roy to reply, “F*** yeah, Princess Diaries,'” proving that Ted Lasso can somehow still build on its fan appreciation.

The scene revealed a different side to the usually austere Roy Kent and had fans of the show imagining how many times he has seen the Anne Hathaway movie.

The original 2001 film – directed by Garry Marshall – follows Mia Thermopolis, a shy American teenager who learns she is heir to the throne of a European kingdom. Under the guidance of her grandmother – the queen – and security lead Joe, Mia must decide whether to claim the throne she has inherited or renounce her title permanently, alongside high school drama and first romances.

Anne Hathaway confirmed the exciting news that a third movie is in the works back in 2019 during an interview with Andy Cohen, revealing:

“There is a script for a third movie. There is a script. I want to do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen, it’s just we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect, because we love it just as much as you guys love it. It’s as important to us as it is to you. And we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

Ever since, fans have been eager to hear if The Princess Diaries 3 is still on the cards, and now it seems Roy Kent and the Ted Lasso coaches are just as excited as we are.

Andrews has, however, told Access Hollywood that a third film is “probably not going to be possible” due to the large gap from 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement to now. Furthermore, Andrews cited the death of the former director, Garry Marshall, in 2016 as another reason why “in terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.”

Whether you love Disney Legend Julie Andrews in The Princess DiariesThe Sound of MusicMy Fair Lady, or even Despicable Me (2010), it’s evident that the Disney actress is still loved across the world. Hopefully, this means she will return for The Princess Diaries 3!

Brett Goldstein made his Disney debut in the Marvel Studios sequel Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) alongside Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, playing Hercules in a surprising post-credits cameo.
