Just weeks after Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) roared into theaters, the monstrous Distortus Rex – or “D-Rex” – is already back in action. But not in the way fans hoped.
Despite being plastered across posters and trailers, the nightmarish hybrid – think T. rex meets Xenomorph from Alien meets Rancor from Star Wars, which is exactly how the filmmakers described it – barely shows up in the actual film, bookending the story with appearances that feel more like shoehorned cameos.
But now, thanks to the the popular augmented reality-based mobile app game “Jurassic World: Alive”, the D-Rex has a new lease on life, appearing as a new creature for fans to enjoy. Players can battle it, collect it, and actually spend more time with it than they did in the new movie. It’s a win for fans left cold by Rebirth’s frustrating bait-and-switch.
What’s more interesting, though, is what this might mean for the franchise’s future. Rebirth is a financial juggernaut, already pulling in over $400 million globally. That kind of performance all but guarantees another sequel — and this time, maybe the D-Rex won’t be tossed aside like a rejected toy prototype.

Could the D-Rex Appear in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory?
The creature’s grotesque design practically screams “expanded universe.” Could it slither into Netflix’s Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, the animated series that keeps weaving itself tighter into the franchise’s live-action storylines?
The D-Rex’s twisted origin — a shady InGen experiment that escaped the lab (all thanks to a Snickers bar wrapper, no less) — is exactly the kind of juicy material a show like Chaos Theory loves to dig into.
So yes, the D-Rex was underused, but in this franchise, dinosaurs, whether natural or mutated, tend not to stay dead for too long. The Indominus Rex might have been swallowed whole by the Mosasaurus in Jurassic World (2015), but it lived on through its smaller descendant, the Indoraptor, in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018).
The D-Rex may have been side-lined in Rebirth, but its story might just be getting started.
