The retirement of DinoLand U.S.A. marked the conclusion of a classic era at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but the speed at which its successor is climbing into the Florida sky is nothing short of breathtaking. Work on the highly anticipated Tropical Americas expansion is moving at an aggressive, vertical pace.

Targeted to open in 2027, construction crews are actively transforming the 11-acre site into Pueblo Esperanza, a fictional village nestled in the heart of the rainforest. Thanks to the legendary aerial photography of @bioreconstruct, recent bird’s-eye scans have exposed major physical milestones taking shape this June. From clever optical illusions on warehouse roofs to massive concrete portals on the ground, the structural skeleton of Disney’s next mega-land is finally a reality.
The Rooftop Illusion: Sculpting Colombia Out of Foam
The most massive structure on the site is the fully enclosed show building housing Disney’s first-ever ride-through attraction themed to Encanto. This dark ride will invite guests inside La Casa Madrigal on the fateful day young Antonio receives his magical animal gift.
While the industrial warehouse shell is entirely sealed, @bioreconstruct’s aerial lens revealed a bizarre sight on the rooftop: dozens of oversized white blocks scattered across the surface.
These are blocks of high-density architectural foam. Because standard concrete is far too heavy for a roof to support, Imagineers use these lightweight, weather-resistant foam blocks as a carving base. Crews will stack and sculpt these shapes before coating them in specialized concrete to form the rolling background hills of the Colombian jungle, perfectly masking the flat roof from guest sightlines below.
Down on the ground, heavy machinery is actively grading massive slopes of fresh dirt around newly poured concrete foundations. This earth-moving project is building the physical hill on which the Madrigal Casita will stand, directly matching the land’s original concept art.
Portals to the Village: Concrete Archways and Plaza Hubs
Down in the center of the village plaza, the layout is rapidly transitioning from a flat mud lot into an organized marketplace. The most exciting update for onlookers is the emergence of multiple concrete archways that frame the primary pedestrian paths.

On one side of the main walkway, two vertical concrete pillars are now joined by a central archway, currently supported by temporary wooden framing while the mix cures. On the opposite path, two smaller arches have already been stripped of their yellow construction molds, standing cleanly as permanent gateways. These structures will eventually be sculpted and painted to resemble weathered, centuries-old Spanish colonial stone architecture.
Nearby, the octagonal foundation for the land’s wood-carved animal carousel has been established, accompanied by a brand-new concrete-block support building that has gone vertical over the last few weeks.
Repurposing History: The Indy Temple and The Hacienda
On the eastern edge of the construction site, the former DINOSAUR attraction is undergoing a massive architectural facelift. The multi-story steel framework attached to the front of the building remains the highest point on the site. This steel skeleton will support the grand, imposing facade of an ancient Maya temple, the setting for the land’s high-thrill Indiana Jones adventure.
Interestingly, Disney is saving considerable time by preserving the park’s largest pre-existing structures. Building permits confirm that the former Restaurantosaurus dining complex is being preserved and extensively re-skinned to become a sprawling, open-air, hacienda-style quick-service restaurant. To facilitate this massive remodel, crews have paved a temporary dirt access road straight through the center of the site, allowing heavy cranes to reach the temple area without damaging the fragile utility grids being laid underneath the main market plaza.
