A Pirate’s Life

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Mexican actor Sergio Calderón died at 77 earlier this week in a Los Angeles hospital in the company of his loved ones. His career in Hollywood spanned more than 40 films over multiple decades, in addition to having roles in the original Men in Black (1997) opposite Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith, as well as the movie Little Fockers (2010).

However, one of his most famous roles was as Captain Eduardo Villanueva, the Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007). His character shared his piece of eight with fellow Pirate Lords in a conclave within the secret Shipwreck Cove.

While working on the film, Calderón worked with A-list actors like Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp and icons like Keith Richards, who played Captain Edward Teague.

Calderón’s 40 Film Career

Sergio Calderón was born in Mexico in 1945 and studied at the Instituto Andrés Soler of the Asociación Nacional de Actores. Although he was not necessarily a household name, he was an actor who appeared in many films and television shows going back to the 1970s. Throughout his legendary acting career, he worked with many famous actors, including Johnny Depp, Albert Finney, Tommy Lee Jones, and many others.

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
