Pandemic Restrictions Just Shut Down This Disney Park (Again)

Disney fans around the world are certainly joining everyone else in feeling very tired of living in “unprecedented times.” While most Disney Parks and Resorts, and even sailings aboard Disney Cruise Line ships have returned to normal, Guests are still feeling some of the lasting impacts of the pandemic.

At the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort, these impacts are thankfully rather limited, and namely come in the form of certain amenities or shops and restaurants that have yet to return largely due to staffing challenges.

Unfortunately for Guests planning a trip to one international Disney Park, COVID-19 restrictions have once again shut down travels for the immediate future.

Shanghai Disneyland, which only just reopened from its previous pandemic-related closure four days ago on November 25, 2022, is closed indefinitely as of today, November 29, 2022. Disney has not yet confirmed a reopening date for the Park, and has updated the Resort’s website with the following message:

In order to follow the requirement of pandemic prevention and control, Shanghai Disneyland will be temporarily closed starting Tuesday, November 29, 2022.

We will notify Guests as soon as we have a confirmed date to resume operations. Disneytown, Wishing Star Park, and the two Resort hotels will continue to operate normally.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide refunds or exchanges for all Guests impacted during this period. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Shanghai Disneyland has had a challenging time recovering from the COVID-19 crisis, as the flagship Park and its accompanying Resort have been subject to the strictest and longest-lasting health and safety restrictions. In its most recent closure, the Disney Park was shut down for nearly one month from October 31-November 25, 2022.

The current closure of Shanghai Disneyland also comes as tensions in the area continue to rise amid protests against continued COVID-19 restrictions (primarily the ongoing required tests and lockdown situations) and censorship under the Communist Party.

Shanghai Disneyland was one of the first major theme parks around the world to reopen after initial COVID shutdowns took place in 2020, but it has also closed multiple times since then. (For reference, Shanghai Disneyland reopened in May 2020, while Walt Disney World opened in July and Disneyland not until April 2021.)

We will continue to monitor updates out of Shanghai Disneyland and will be back with additional information as we have it here on Disney Tips.
