Want to Buy These Things at Disney? Think Again

A Disney vacation can be expensive and overwhelming.

Just the thought of planning what to bring, what to buy, and what to eat can be enough to send anyone into a spiral.

When visiting any of the Disney Parks or Resorts across the world, Guests have to get Park Pass reservations, plan Disney Genie, book dining reservations, budget for merchandise – and must follow certain rules and regulations that when ignored, could result in getting kicked out, or even being banned, from the Parks.

But there are particular items that you can’t even buy on your visit to the Disneyland Resort in California or the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida! So, if some of the following are things you can’t live without on your next Disney vacation, be prepared to pack these into your suitcase or backpack before you arrive.

A well-known Disney fun fact is that chewing gum is not sold in any Disney Park.

This idea came from Walt Disney himself, who wanted to make sure that the Park’s Guests could enjoy their visits without getting chewing gum stuck to their shoes. That is why none of the shops in any Disney theme park sells gum.

This sticky treat is difficult for custodial Cast Members to clean up, thus Disneyland and Walt Disney World don’t sell gum at all. Obviously, this doesn’t mean a few pieces don’t make their way into the Parks, but by not selling gum, the company is able to cut back on gum usage and cleaning drastically.

There are many obvious items that are not allowed to go with you on your magical experience in Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks.

Dangerous articles like firearms, knives, and weapons, as well as illegal substances and alcoholic beverages, are not permitted in Disney Parks, and security Cast Members at each theme park entrance will find these.

But there’s one surprising thing that is not allowed into a Disney Park – and cannot be purchased there either. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Guests will not find balloons. Once again, this is for safety reasons, as popped balloons can easily be ingested and cause digestive and breathing problems for the multitude of amazing animals in the theme park.

For this reason, the balloon you purchased back in Magic Kingdom will need to be left in your hotel room. Otherwise, you’ll likely be asked to throw it away. The full list of prohibited items at Disney Parks is detailed below:

  • Firearms, ammunition, knives, or weapons of any kind
  • Self-defense or restraining devices
  • Marijuana or any illegal substances
  • Objects or toys that could look like firearms or weapons
  • Fireworks or other explosive or flammable devices
  • Alcoholic beverages except at the Disney Resort hotels and Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Disney notes that wine may be brought into select restaurants at Disney Springs)
  • Glass containers, except in Disney Resort hotels and Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser
  • Horns, whistles, megaphones, or noisemakers
  • Selfie sticks
  • Recreational devices like drones, remote-control toys, skateboards, scooters, bikes, skates, rollerblades. Bicycles are permitted in designated areas within Disney Resorts
  • Wagons or strollers that are greater than 31 inches in width and 52 inches in length
  • Folding chairs
  • Balloons and plastic chairs in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, water parks, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Yes, you can buy soda in the Parks, but there are some brands you will not find.

Disney and Coca-Cola have had a partnership for a long time, so you won’t find any Pepsi products around Disney World or Disneyland. If you are a die-hard Pepsi or Dr. Pepper fan, we recommend bringing your own or ordering groceries to your Disney Resort Hotel.

Hearing Aid Batteries

Unfortunately, you will not find any hearing aid supplies on Disneyland or Walt Disney World property. Make sure that you pack extra of these essential supplies before your Disney trip. While there are lots of drugstores close to the property it is rather difficult and will cost you to get there unless you have a rental car.

When you order a drink at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the first thing you’ll probably notice (after the fun Mickey Mouse cup design) is that it doesn’t have a lid.

The second thing you’ll realize is that there are no plastic straws to be found. This is intentional, and all about the environment – just like the balloons.

Straws and lids have a way of making their way into animal enclosures and can easily cause harm to the zebras, monkeys, and other wonderful animals at the Lake Buena Vista Park. Therefore, lids and plastic straws are banned at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and anyone seen with either of these items will be asked to toss them.

Guests can pick up paper straws at just about any restaurant in Animal Kingdom, including the Starbucks in Creature Comforts. Disney is slowly getting rid of plastic straws and lids across all its theme parks and introducing paper straws to more and more locations.

While Disney World Hotels and Resorts sell a small selection of over-the-counter drugs in gift shops, Guests will not find medicine in the stores at the theme parks. We recommend either bringing a little emergency first aid kit or heading to the Park’s First Aid Stations:

  • Magic Kingdom First Aid Station: You can find Magic Kingdom’s First Aid between Crystal Palace and Casey’s Corner. Take a left off Main Street, as if you’re walking towards Adventureland after entering the theme park.
  • EPCOT First Aid Station: Located inside the Odyssey Center, a building on the water in Future World by Mexico in World Showcase.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios First Aid Station: Head right to where you enter the Park by Guest Services and Sid Cahuenga’s.
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom First Aid Station: Found on Discovery Island, close to the bridge that takes Guests to Africa.

Toy Guns

While it’s still possible to purchase lightsabers and toy swords on Disney property, you won’t find any toy guns for sale anywhere in Walt Disney World. Stores like the one at Pirate of the Caribbean previously sold plastic guns, but no longer!

As we’ve previously mentioned, you’ll also not be allowed into any Disney Park with anything that looks remotely like a gun, even if it’s clearly a toy – and this includes water guns.

So, there you have it. There’s a lot of Disney merchandise, collectibles, popcorn buckets, ornaments, and more that you can purchase in Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disneyland Park, and Disney California Adventure, but if you desire gum, a Pepsi, a plastic straw, batteries, or medicine on your trip, we recommend packing these yourself or ordering them to your Disney Hotel.

We wouldn’t want you getting caught out on your dream Disney vacation!
