For most Disney guests, getting evacuated from an attraction is an unexpected twist in the story. But when that attraction happens to be The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the eerie factor skyrockets. This week, visitors waiting to board the Hollywood Studios icon were suddenly ushered out of the queue in a way that left some wondering whether they had stepped into the ride’s own ghostly storyline.
The Tower of Terror has been thrilling guests since its 1994 debut, offering a perfect mix of Hollywood horror and cutting-edge ride technology. With its elaborate theming, unpredictable drop sequence, and eerie atmosphere, it remains one of Disney World’s most beloved attractions. But like any ride, it occasionally experiences technical hiccups—though this latest incident seems to be shrouded in a bit more mystery than usual.
What Happened at Tower of Terror?
According to guests visiting Hollywood Studios on March 14, the attraction was abruptly evacuated under unusual circumstances. A Reddit user who was there described the moment things took a strange turn: “Right when we got into the room to watch the film, the lights came on and the door opened. It was really weird because the video didn’t finish, and all of the sudden everybody in the lines getting onto the ride started coming towards us saying we need to evacuate.”
A cast member reportedly approached the group looking “pretty nervous” and rushed everyone out of the building. What struck guests as odd was that this didn’t feel like a routine ride breakdown. “It wasn’t like the ride broke down because they usually keep you in line for that,” the guest noted. With no official word from Disney, speculation ran wild, with some suggesting it may have been a fire alarm—an occurrence that isn’t uncommon at Disney parks. If true, it would be a minor disruption compared to the recent incident that temporarily closed Guardians of the Galaxy – Cosmic Rewind.
The Haunted History of Tower of Terror
For those unfamiliar with The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, the ride is more than just a standard drop tower. Inspired by The Twilight Zone, it transports guests into the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel, where a paranormal lightning strike in 1939 caused five guests to vanish inside an elevator, trapping them in The Twilight Zone. Riders board a service elevator, experiencing eerie apparitions and shifting dimensions before plunging into a series of randomized drops.
Disneyland Resort once had its own version, but it was reimagined as Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! in 2017, sparking concern among Disney World fans that their version could one day meet the same fate. So far, there’s no indication that’s happening—though even Ariana Grande has publicly shared her discontent at the idea. However, the ride has faced a handful of maintenance struggles in recent years.
While it’s still unclear exactly what happened at Tower of Terror this week, longtime fans of the attraction might say it’s just part of the experience. After all, when you enter The Twilight Zone, anything can happen.
