Two of the Largest Discount Airlines Merging into One. What Does This Mean for You?

On Monday, February 7, Spirit and Frontier Airlines announced a merge that would create America’s fifth largest airline. They proposed a 2.9 billion dollar deal. It is said to be a 6 billion dollar deal in total.

These are two of the low cost airlines that very often you can find round trip flights for under $100. You have to pay for extras, but great deals are easy to find if you don’t mind just having the basics.

Both airlines were hit hard by the pandemic. On Monday, Frontier and Spirit reported they suffered fourth quarter losses of 87.2 million for Spirit and 53 million for Frontier. They said the company combined will grow and create 10,000 new jobs by 2026.

It has yet to be approved by federal regulators. Critics say that this will be a bad merger for consumers, though. Although more cities will be flying to, there will no longer be competition between the two airlines for who has the lowest price. It is said that the more airlines in the mix, the better deals customers will get. Only time will tell to see if this is true.
