The next James Bond film is officially underway, with Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Dune: Part Two) at the helm and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) on writing duties. However, alongside the project, the 007 franchise is preparing another major reboot.

“007 First Light”, developed by IO Interactive, is an upcoming third-person action-adventure that will serve as an origin story for the MI6 agent (although it’s not expected to be canon with the new film reboot, according to IO’s franchise director Jonathan Lacaille).

Players will control James Bond as a young recruit, taking part in missions that build toward his emergence as 007. IO has labelled it a “thrilling narrative action-adventure game” and has confirmed a 2026 launch across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. The announcement trailer that dropped a few months ago withholds the lead actor’s identity, though online fans believe it could be Patrick Gibson (Dexter: Original Sin). In a recent interview with Radiotimes.com, Jonathan Lacaille has stated that the reveal will come later in the summer.

Discussion has also focused on the depiction of M. In “First Light”, the MI6 chief appears as an Indian woman, a contrast to the White British actors who have played the role on film. However, “M” is a codename, not a single character identity — a role previously held by Bernard Lee, Robert Brown, Dame Judi Dench, and Ralph Fiennes in the many Bond films.

Another figure seen in the footage is Bond’s mentor John Greenway, whom some viewers think is played by Lennie James (The Walking Dead). His involvement hasn’t been confirmed, either.

In gaming history, “GoldenEye 007” on Nintendo 64 remains the most acclaimed Bond title. Released in 1997, it was adapted from the 1995 Pierce Brosnan film of the same name and became one of the era’s defining shooters. Several more Bond games were released over the years, but IO Interactive’s project will be the most high-profile attempt since the 1997 FPS.

Meanwhile, the cinematic Bond role remains uncast. Online speculation currently includes Henry Golding, Theo James, and Tom Holland, with Idris Elba also still in discussion among audiences and commentators. No announcement has been made as yet.
