8. Dining with the characters

Choose your son’s favorite character and make a reservation for a delicious and entertaining meal with that character. Character meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available at each of the four theme parks and at many of the resorts as well, so find his favorite pal, and don’t forget to pose together for a great picture.

7. Matching costumes

Plan to attend a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party night together in the fall at the Magic Kingdom and coordinate with matching costumes. The possibilities are endless, but easy ideas might be Batman and Catwoman, Olaf and Elsa or Anna, two swashbuckling pirates, or a Jedi and Princess Leia.

6. A date at the lanes

Head to Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Disney Springs to see who has the better bowling skills. Splitsville offers 30 bowling lanes and a delicious menu to enjoy, along with music and dancing.

5. Trekking together

If you’re looking for a mother/son idea that is filled with adventure, sign up for the Wild Africa Trek at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  A Disney guide with lead you on an expedition to view the African animals across the savanna via truck, and then you can observe them up close as you cross paths and rickety rope bridges via foot. This tour does come with an extra cost in addition to the entry ticket into the park, and guests must be eight years of age or older and 48 inches tall. There are specific weight requirements as well. A stop on the tour includes gourmet snacks, and photos are taken throughout the adventure that can be accessed online.

4. Thrills

If your mother/son duo craves excitement, plan a day that includes all or some of the thrilling attractions in each of the parks. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom you could tackle Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, Dinosaur, and Flight of Passage. Epcot takes you on a breakneck ride on Test Track, Soarin’ Around the World, and then a gravity-defying trip on Mission Space. Get your Star Wars on at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, and Star Tours. You can also race with Aerosmith on the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, take a chilling descent on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, or dash on Slinky Dog Dash in Toy Story Land. Magic Kingdom thrill are with a tour of the mountains. Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Space Mountain are all part of the fun… then end with a magical ride on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

3. Outstanding shows

Perhaps your mother/son day involves a slightly slower pace, maybe with a little of Walt Disney World’s first-class entertainment. Grab a seat for Beauty and the Beast-Live on Stage at Disney’s Hollywood Studios or the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! It’s hard to choose a show at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, with the Festival of the Lion King, and Finding Nemo-the Musical all being top-notch choices. Strolling through Epcot’s World Showcase lets you experience a unique collection of entertainers, from the talented Dragon acrobats in the China Pavilion and the comical Serveur Amusant at the France pavilion to the soaring sounds of the Voices of Liberty at the American Adventure and the upbeat tunes of the British Revolution in the United Kingdom pavilion.

2. Become a pirate duo

Make a date at the Pirates League and get mother and son pirate makeovers. Set your course for Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom and find the Pirates League location, right beside the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.  Guests receive an imaginative pirate name and get to choose your pirate look. Mermaid packages are also available.  Once the makeover is complete, it’s time to recite the pirate oath. Get your official mother/son pirate portrait taken so you both remember this adventure!

1. Carnival fun

Test your midway skills and have a friendly mother/son competition at Chester & Hester’s Dino Rama.  Located in the colorful Dinoland U.S.A. area of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, these hilarious prehistoric-themed carnival games offer cute prizes to the lucky winner.  After a few games of chance, keep the fun going with a silly spin on the Primeval Whirl roller coaster and a quick bite at Restaurantosaurus.

Having visited Walt Disney World several times growing up, I really caught the Disney bug after many trips with my husband. Now I am happily addicted to taking our son to Walt Disney World as often as possible and watching him experience the magic and Mickey Bars as he grows up. Traveling to Walt Disney World twice a year, I enjoy attending the Flower and Garden festival held in the spring and strolling around the World Showcase, as well as exploring all of the hidden gems that all four parks have to offer. I love helping my family and friends plan their next Disney trips based on my experiences. I also enjoy reading, swimming, traveling, and cheering for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I grew up in Southwestern Pennsylvania, attended Shippensburg University, and current live in suburban Philadelphia with my husband, son, and two cats.
