Avatar or Spaceship Earth? The Massive New Theme Park Rumor Disney Refuses to Confirm

When Disney announced a monumental $60 billion capital expenditure injection to “turbocharge” its Experiences division over the next decade, the theme park community immediately went into overdrive. A fund that massive implies groundbreaking, generational expansion. While ongoing domestic updates for California and Florida frequently dominate the headlines, an entirely different, high-stakes international mystery has captured the internet’s attention.

The online frenzy originally ignited earlier this year when a series of unverified leaks surfaced under the internal codename Project Atlas. Rumored zoning maps and blurry concept art pointed to a stunning new second gate—complete with a massive geodesic sphere mimicking Orlando’s Spaceship Earth, a concept fans quickly dubbed “EPCOT 2.0.”

Since then, the rumor mill has rapidly shifted. Current speculation suggests that if a science-and-technology theme was ever on the table, it has been scrapped in favor of a movie-heavy “Disney Adventures” park, potentially anchoring a massive Avatar land. But before you get too excited, it is time for a reality check: Disney has not made an official announcement. Despite the fan frenzy, this project remains locked in pure speculation.

The Standing Ovation Concept

While the Project Atlas leaks are unconfirmed, the concept of a second park for this resort isn’t a particularly wild theory. In his architectural retrospectives, former Walt Disney Imagineering President Bob Weis revealed that an art-and-nature-driven second park was pitched during the resort’s early planning phases.

According to Weis, the highly creative concept actually received a rare standing ovation from internal stakeholders. However, leadership ultimately deemed a second gate too premature for the resort’s infancy, choosing instead to pivot those immense creative resources into building the highly successful Zootopia land at Shanghai Disneyland. While those award-winning blueprints definitely exist in the Disney archives, there is no official proof that they are being dusted off today.

The Real International Focus: Disneyland Abu Dhabi

Another major reason to treat these second-gate rumors with extreme caution is that Disney Experiences already has its hands full with a fully confirmed international gateway: Disneyland Abu Dhabi.

Unlike the unconfirmed whispers floating around China, the Middle Eastern expansion is a done deal. Officially announced through a landmark partnership with Miral Group, Disneyland Abu Dhabi is slated for the stunning waterfront of Yas Island, making it Disney’s seventh global resort destination.

The project is moving forward under a “capital-light” model where Miral fully funds, builds, and operates the location. At the same time, Walt Disney Imagineering retains creative design and operational oversight in exchange for lucrative royalties. Disney CEO Bob Iger has even toured the Yas Island site personally. Managing an official, multi-billion-dollar international undertaking of this scale means Disney’s core design teams are already heavily tied up.

Grounding the Hype: What is Actually Happening?

To separate internet chatter from concrete reality, we need only look at what Disney has officially authorized and confirmed for construction at Shanghai Disneyland. Right now, the corporate strategy is entirely about maximizing the capacity of the existing footprint, including:

  • A Spider-Man Thrill Coaster: A confirmed, upcoming Marvel-themed attraction.
  • Capacity Expansions: Structural updates to major crowd-pleasers like Soaring Over the Horizon.
  • A Fourth Resort Hotel: An upscale Art Nouveau-themed property currently under active construction.

A second gate makes great logistical sense down the line to help absorb the resort’s massive daily crowds. However, until the House of Mouse officially takes the stage with a concrete announcement, Project Atlas remains a digital ghost. For now, the only confirmed future of international Disney magic lies on the shores of Abu Dhabi.
