Disney Cracks Down on Portable Chargers, Issues Strict Rules for All Guests

One Disney resort has issued a warning to guests over the use of portable chargers on property.

Portable lithium-ion batteries — including everyday power banks — have come under increased scrutiny in recent years. Regulators across multiple countries have raised concerns after a number of overheating and combustion incidents linked to improper charging and storage of these devices.

Several airlines – particularly those in Asia – have since introduced their own rules on loose lithium-ion batteries. While you typically already can’t place them in your checked luggage, the likes of Emirates, Vietnam Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, EVA Air, Thai Airways, and AirAsia have banned the use of these power banks in-flight to avoid the risk of fire.

One Disney destination has implemented guidelines to prevent similar incidents from occurring onsite.

Disney Resort Cracks Down on Guests Using Portable Chargers

Tokyo Disney Resort released a guest notice in November explaining that Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency and Fire and Disaster Management Agency have recently issued warnings related to products that contain lithium-ion batteries, including mobile chargers. The notice emphasizes the resort’s responsibility to maintain a safe environment for all visitors.

“To ensure that all of our guests enjoy their stay with a sense of safety and reassurance, we ask that you please take the following precautions when using mobile batteries and other similar products,” the resort advises.

Guests are asked to avoid using or storing portable chargers in high-temperature areas or near flammable materials. This includes windows exposed to direct sunlight, bedding, curtains, and enclosed spaces where heat can build up, such as inside bags or wrapped in fabric.

The resort also warns against leaving charging devices unattended. Guests are told not to charge portable batteries while they are out of their rooms or asleep. Instead, they should keep the device in sight during charging.

Cast members at Tokyo Disney hotels – such as Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, the costly Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel, and Tokyo Disney Resort Toy Story Hotel – may intervene if unsafe charging practices are noticed during room cleaning.

According to the advisory, staff may move the device or stop charging entirely if they believe there is a fire risk. The resort asks for guest understanding and cooperation as part of standard safety protocol.

Despite the cautionary rules, portable chargers remain available throughout the parks to help guests keep their phones charged. Tokyo Disney Resort offers portable charger rental stations inside both parks for a small fee. These rental units can be returned across multiple kiosks, which theoretically means that most guests don’t end up taking them back to their hotel rooms.

Other Disney parks offer similar solutions. Disneyland Paris provides portable charger rentals for guests who need extra battery support during the day. At Walt Disney World Resort – which experienced a portable charger fire earlier this year – and Disneyland Resort in the U.S., FuelRod kiosks allow guests to purchase or exchange small portable chargers at stations throughout the parks.
