Disney’s Recent Price Hikes Just Got Them in Big Trouble

It looks like Disney is in hot water again over some of their recent price hikes, but this time it’s serious. The Walt Disney Company is currently being sued over its streaming platform’s rate increases.

Disney has been raising prices at a rapid speed as of late. Disney Tips recently reported on the higher cost of Magic Key Renewals available at Disneyland Resort, as well as photo package price hikes for the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

Earlier this month, Disney announced that rate increases were coming for Disney+ along with ad-supported features. Whether or not a person already has a plan and what type of package they’re interested in all play into the determination of new costs arriving on December 8.

Forbes just reported that a Consumer Advocacy Group in Germany, Verbraucherzentrale Brandenburg (VZB), is initiating legal proceedings against The Walt Disney Company. VZB claims that a provision in the Disney+ contract relating to Disney’s ability to increase prices at the customer’s expense with no restrictions is “a clear violation of the legal regulations.”

The German Advocacy Group tested Disney by issuing a press release about their case against them as a warning. When The Walt Disney Company failed to respond, VBZ initiated proceedings at Potsdam District Court.

A disgruntled customer prompted VBZ to take action, making them aware that Disney+ “reserve(s) the right to change the prices with effect from the beginning of a new subscription period with 30 days advance notice.” The problem is, Disney does not mention what factors contribute to an implemented price change.

According to VBZ expert Michele Scherer, this prohibits customers from estimating possible price increases, which is not moral in the group’s opinion. VBZ admits that consumers have the option to reject the cost adjustments but states Disney did not specify the consequences of that particular rejection.

The Consumer Advocacy Group insists that companies must provide information on why they are increasing their prices. Disney Tips will keep you updated on this case as we get more information about its proceedings.
