Inside Out (2015) is arguably one of Disney Pixar’s best films in recent years, even earning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. And it certainly performed better at the box office than Lightyear (2022) or Elemental (2023). Disney California Adventure Park in California has even seen an Inside Out-themed attraction (Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind) debut at its Park.

The success and love for the 2015 film have propelled Walt Disney Studios into announcing their plans to release a sequel. Here’s what we know so far…

Cast Changes

Although Amy Poehler is reprising her role as Joy, the main emotion/character in the original film, not everyone else is returning. The confirmation of her return came at last year’s D23 Expo. Lewis Black is said to return as Anger, and it’s believed that Phyllis Smith will be reprising her role as Sadness.

However, Mindy Kaling will not be returning to play her emotion/character (Disgust) and Bill Hader will not return as Fear.

In addition, we can expect a couple of new characters, as there have been hints that new emotions will appear. How are new emotions arriving in the sequel? Simple. Riley will be a teenager. And as we all know, that can come with a whole new list of complicated and confusing emotions. Pixar CCO Pete Docter revealed that the sequel could have up to 27 new emotions.

Behind the Scenes Talent

The new movie will be directed by Kelsey Mann – who has previously worked on The Good Dinosaur (2015), Lightyear (2022), and Onward (2020) – although none of these were in a directorial role.

Inside Out 2 (2024)  will be written by Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote the original Inside Out (2015) screenplay.

Obviously, much more news has yet to come out regarding this film. It’s set for a release date of  June 14, 2024, so there is a lot more information and details to come out over the next 11 months. But in the meantime, we can patiently wait and hope that Inside Out 2 (2024) will give us the best that Disney Pixar has to offer!

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
