How ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Sets up a Brand-New Trilogy

The dinosaurs have evolved—and the franchise is evolving with them.
Jurassic World Rebirth arrives in theaters July 2, and it signals a new direction for the series. Not just in story, but in tone, ambition, and where things could go next.

Gareth Edwards is in the director’s chair this time, bringing the same grounded scale he brought to Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). David Koepp, who penned the original Jurassic Park (1993), is back on screenplay duty.

Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali star as a group of experts on a mission to retrieve dinosaur DNA from a hidden island facility. But they stumble upon a “sinister, shocking discovery” involving mutant dinosaurs.

The second official trailer gave us a better look at the “Distortus Rex,” a snarling, malformed creature described as a nightmare fusion of T-Rex and the Xenomorph from Alien (1979). Add to that the Mutadons — airborne raptor hybrids — and it’s clear the franchise is leaning harder into sci-fi territory than ever before. Watch the new trailer below:

Universal has yet to announce a trilogy, but Rebirth is being promoted as the launch of “a new Jurassic era.” With the last two trilogies grossing billions worldwide, it would be surprising if they didn’t greenlight two more films. Financial logic alone all but guarantees it.

And if Rebirth is about mutation, what comes next?

The idea of human-dino hybrids — long considered too far-fetched — might now be within reach. Especially if the next installments explore how far InGen’s experiments really went. The door’s wide open for clones, creatures that defy classification, and a question the series has been circling since 1993: just because we can, should we?

Jurassic World Rebirth may be the seventh film in the series, but it’s the first that feels like it’s truly evolving. And evolution rarely comes without chaos.
