As summer comes to a close, Walt Disney World Resort has introduced its spooky season with the fan-favorite Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Park. And while Guests are flocking to the iconic Disney Park to welcome fall, one Magic Kingdom attraction is scheduled to be closed for refurbishment.

Not only is one of Disney’s Water Parks, Blizzard Beach, undergoing a lengthy refurbishment, but at Magic Kingdom Park, Guests will find Walt Disney World Railroad has been closed since December 2018. The long-lasting construction of the new Tomorrowland rollercoaster, TRON Lightcylce Run, has kept the train’s reopening on hold.

But, as we move over to the Frontierland portion of Magic Kingdom, Guests visiting in the near future will want to be aware that Liberty Square Riverboat attraction is scheduled to close.

The 17-minute charming trip around Tom Sawyer Island in the Colonia-era Liberty Belle riverboat has no operating times scheduled on the Walt Disney World website for August 22 through September 1, 2022. On Friday, September 2, operating hours once again appear.

While Disney has not noted the reason for the closure, refurbishment is suspected as a similar closure was scheduled in 2021 around the same dates. This likely means this is the best time for Disney to provide routine maintenance on the 47-foot tall Liberty Square Riverboat.

If you’ve never experienced the Riverboat attraction, it’s a great way to relax with family and friends on one of the boat’s four decks. The voice of the iconic Mark Twain narrates the experience as a nostalgic trip back to the American frontier. Sites include:

  • An early American settlement
  • An idyllic Native American village
  • Harper’s Mill
  • Fort Langhorn
  • Wilson’s Cave Inn
  • Woodland animals

Plus, the boat ride offers unique views of popular attractions such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Splash Mountain, and the Haunted Mansion that most Guests never see unless on the Liberty Square Riverboat.

We will share updates as we learn more about Liberty Square Riverboat’s refurbishment. If planning a Disney vacation between August 22 – September 1, 2022, however, be sure to remove this Disney experience from your Magic Kingdom plans.
