What’s your favorite song from Frozen II (2019), the award-winning sequel to the Walt Disney Studio’s smash hit, Frozen (2013)? If it’s the catchy intro that begins the film, it’s possible you won’t be able to hear it for much longer.

Is it true that “Some Things Never Change?” This is the line the beloved Princess Anna sings to Olaf at the beginning of the Frozen sequel, highlighting that even though time has passed since the events of the first film, bringing new changes to the kingdom of Arendelle, the love and friendship they share are unwavering.

Ironically, soon you might not be able to hear the song at all. A Los Angeles-based musician and father named Daniel Grigson has filed a lawsuit with LA County courts against the House of Mouse.

Grigson alleges that Disney lifted elements from the song, written by Robert Lopez and his wife, Kristen Jane Anderson, for the Disney film. The suit, filed on November 1, claims that the Frozen track plagiarised elements of Grigson’s own song, “That Girl,” written 20 years prior. Listen to it below to see if you spot any resemblances:

Though Disney released the film three years ago now, it wasn’t until Grigson’s 11-year-old daughter turned to him and said, “Dad, Disney took your song,” while listening to “Some Things Never Change,” that connection was apparently made. The artist feels the heartwarming duet borrowed lyrics, chord progression, and structure, among other details, from his own work. If proven in a court of law, Disney will have to pay out a portion of the song’s profits to Grigson, and allegedly discontinue its use within Frozen II’s soundtrack.

However, even if this comes to pass, it likely won’t affect the worldwide popularity of the characters and music from both films, their Broadway musical, stage show at Disney California Adventure, and subsequent two spinoff shorts, “Frozen Fever” and “Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.” Even now, Frozen-themed additions are coming to Disney Parks and Resorts in California, Florida, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. It seems Disney will be “holding on tight” to elements of their beloved films.

Before any decision is made, both songs will be professionally analyzed for similarities as a result of the legal proceedings. For now, fans with “Frozen Fever” can continue to enjoy attractions and experiences centered around the two sisters’ storyline within the Disney Parks, and enjoy both films any time with an active Disney+ subscription, all songs included.
