Tell the guards to open up the gates… at Disney California Adventure! Love isn’t the only open door around the second gate at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. After a long hiatus due to COVID-19 procedures, Disney Parks announced the return of the fan-favorite Character Close-up with Anna and Elsa today! The sister duo from Frozen (2013) hosted visitors inside the Animation Academy of Disney California Adventure (DCA) building until 2019. Read on for more details about their royal return.

Prior to the imposed closure, fans greeted the newly crowned Queen Anna in her royal regalia and her older sister, Elsa, bedecked in the wintery Fifth Spirit outfit she created during her solo number in Frozen II (2019), “Show Yourself.”

Disney announced the long-awaited return of Anna and Elsa’s Royal Welcome via the Disney Parks TikTok. In the clip, a camera pans down the Arendelle palace hallway to an elaborately painted doorway. “Elsa, they’re opening up the gates!” giggles Anna. “Yes, Anna, isn’t it wonderful?” answers her sister Elsa. A hand raises to provide the signature knock all fans of “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” will remember well. Then the door opens onto the two queens. They both smile and wave, looking just as eager as Guests are to see everyone for the first time… in forever! Watch the clip below:

Though he’s not shown in the video, the caption also mentions Olaf’s return. Meet and greets with the lovable snowman who likes warm hugs were rare outside of Frozen! Live performances at DCA’s Hyperion Theater. The production also closed in 2020 due to Covid-19. Disney has yet to release a re-opening date for the show, though perhaps this is a step in the right direction. Until then, fans can also look forward to more Frozen “fever” as Tokyo DisneySea announced a new themed land in Fantasy Springs. Many would like nothing more than the full Frozen experience to come back to DCA. After all, Anna and Elsa say being “together” is “their favorite place to be!”

If you’re planning to head to DCA soon, remember that reservations are required in addition to the ticketed entry for the park. You can plan your day ahead of time using Genie+ within the Disneyland mobile app, which also allows you to check wait times and locations for all your favorite character friends.

Are you excited about the return of the Royal Welcome? Will you be visiting Arendelle on your next trip to the Disneyland Resort?
