Do you remember Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom? This interactive card game gave Guests the chance to fight Disney villains with powers from various characters at locations all around Magic Kingdom Park.

In addition to the game itself, players used collectible cards to cast their spells with direction from Merlin himself. Limited edition cards even debuted for special events in the Park, like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. And the best part? Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom was free to play!

What caused the game to come an end, though? Could it ever return to Walt Disney World? We’re taking a look back at Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom to see what the future holds for this interactive Disney Park experience.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom debuted to positive reception from Guests in 2012. The game was a fun “sidequest” to add to a day in the Magic Kingdom, especially for those looking for something fun to do while avoiding the crowds. With three different difficulty levels, and changes based on how often a Guest played, the game was a hit for both children and adults.

To play, Guests would stop at a select location in the Park to pick up the day’s spell cards. The headquarters for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom was in the fire station on Main Street, U.S.A. In fact, if you head inside the fire station today, you can still see some of the portals and other remnants of Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.

From there, a Cast Member would assist Guests in getting set up to play. Players would scan their Magic Bands at designated locations around the Park then they could cast the spell card of their choice. In addition to the spell cards, which became such a collectible item that Disney even sold binders for them, Guests could use detailed Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom maps to make their way around the Park.

At the height of popularity for Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, Guests were incentivized to visit the Park for special events to pick up limited-time spell cards. Disney even sold shirts and other accessories that featured artwork from the game.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom ended in January 2021 after Disney cited changes in technology for the reason that the game came to the end. By that point, Disney was working on MagicBand+ and other components of MagicBand use among Guests (largely that Resort Guests would receive complimentary MagicBands) had been phased out.

On top of the technological changes, Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom was not incredibly popular compared to other attractions in the Park, though the same can be said for nearly any walk-through or scavenger hunt-style attraction as opposed to a ride or show.

As for whether or not Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom could return to Walt Disney World, it seems entirely possible. We cannot confirm its return unless Disney announces it, but it seems that the technology could be reworked to bring the experience back, especially given the new MagicBand’s ability to interact with shows and the Fab 50 character statues around Walt Disney World.

Disney’s new MagicBand+ should pave the way for all kinds of new experiences with the Band’s interactive technology, and we will be sure to keep you updated here on DisneyTips as new details on MagicBand+ are revealed.
