Tony Walton Passes Away at the Age of 87

There have been so many celebrity deaths lately. The end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022 have been a hard time for many. Unfortunately, we are sad to announce that Tony Walton,‘ Mary Poppins’ (1964) production and costume designer, passed away at 87.

His death was announced on Facebook by stepdaughter Bridget LeRoy, who shared, “A fond and loving farewell to the most fabulous stepdad and human being in the world. Love you forever, Tony Walton. Have a great trip.”

Walton is an Oscar and Tony award winning production and costume designer for his most famous work Mary Poppins, All That Jazz (1979), and Guys and Dolls (1955).

 

Walton was born on October 24, 1934, in England. He began his career on Broadway and had an encounter with Walt Disney backstage during his run with Camelot (1967)This led to him being hired as a costume designer, set designer, and virtual consultant for the iconic movie Mary Poppins.

This was where he met Julie Andrews after she was offered the lead role. The two fell in love and got married in 1959 and had one daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. Unfortunately, things did not work out between them, and the couple got divorced in 1968. Decades later, they remained very close friends.

He had a very successful career. He had a total of 16 Tony Award nominations. He received an Emmy for his art direction on Death of a Salesman (1985), starring Dustin Hoffman.

Walton is survived by his first wife Julie Andrews, second wife Gen LeRoy Walton, and daughters Emma Walton Hamilton and Bridget Leroy. Walton also has five grandchildren.
