Will Disney Genie+ Be Worth It After Its Latest Update?

Disney Genie+ has replaced FastPass+ at Walt Disney World and Guests are still adjusting to the new process of eliminating or shortening their wait times for theme park attractions (and understandably so).

Guests using Disney Genie+ opt-in to purchase the service for $15 per person per day for the ability to use the Lightning Lane entrance at select Disney Park attractions according to available times in the My Disney Experience app. The service works similarly to FastPass in that Guests can select a time to experience a given attraction with little to no time spent waiting in line.

What is different from FastPass, aside from the obvious cost where FastPass was free, is the Individual Lightning Lane ride selections that are not included in the list of rides under Disney Genie+ have their separate costs. These rides vary by the Disney Park and cost $8-18 per person for Lightning Lane entry.

Genie+ has undergone several changes since its debut, and Disney has even confirmed that the service will continue to change based on factors like Park capacity, Guest demand, and more.

In the latest update to Genie+, a number of attractions that have been included in the $15 per person/per day service will be moved to Lightning Lane. For Guests, this means that rides that could have cost $15 across the board will now cost $8-18 depending on the attraction, and with Guests riding more than one of these attractions during their trip using the Individual Lightning Lane purchase system, the cost could quickly add up.

Disney’s official website notes:

Until August 7, 2022, Lightning Lane entry selections for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Space Mountain and Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain will be offered through Disney Genie+ service and will not be available as individual (à la carte) purchases.

Will Disney Genie+ continue to have value for Guests after these changes go into effect? Let’s take a look at which attractions will be included in the $15/day Genie+ after August 7, 2022.

Magic Kingdom:

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant
  • Haunted Mansion
  • “it’s a small world”
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Mad Tea Party
  • Meet Cinderella and a Visiting Princess at Princess Fairytale Hall
  • Meet Mickey and Minnie at Town Square Theater
  • Meet Princess Tiana and a Visiting Princess at Princess Fairytale Hall
  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic
  • Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Splash Mountain
  • The Barnstormer
  • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Tomorrowland Speedway
  • Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid

Disney Genie+ might still be a great value for a day spent in the Magic Kingdom, especially where some of the Park’s most popular Disney character meet and greet experiences are included in the lineup, along with thrill rides that often have long wait times like Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

With Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Space Mountain being removed from Genie+ and only available as individual Lightning Lane purchases after August 7, 2022, you may want to try to ride those attractions either right after rope drop, or right before the Park closes to avoid the extra Lightning Lane cost.

  • Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival
  • Journey into Imagination with Figment
  • Living with the Land
  • Mission: SPACE – Green
  • Mission: SPACE – Orange
  • Soarin’ Around the World
  • Spaceship Earth
  • Test Track
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends
  • Turtle Talk with Crush

Whether or not Disney Genie+ still offers a good value to you in EPCOT after August 7 will vary based on the attractions you are interested in and crowd levels. The three attractions that would have the longest wait times, Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will all be individual Lightning Lane purchases (with the additional option of the virtual queue for the latter.)

Disney’s Hollywood Studios:

  • Alien Swirling Saucers
  • Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage
  • Disney Junior Play & Dance!
  • For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration (not available August 22 through September 9, 2022)
  • Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular
  • Meet Olaf at Celebrity Spotlight
  • Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
  • Muppet*Vision 3D
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith
  • Slinky Dog Dash
  • Star Tours – The Adventures Continue
  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™
  • Toy Story Mania!

After the August 7 update, Guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios would still need to purchase Individual Lightning Lanes for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Given the other attractions on the Genie+ lineup, the service may only be worth it in this Disney Park if you are interested in the thrill rides that tend to have longer waits as attractions like Muppet*Vision 3D, Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, and Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular would not require Genie+ to experience with a short wait.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom:

  • Festival of the Lion King
  • Feathered Friends in Flight!
  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…and Beyond!
  • It’s Tough to Be a Bug!
  • Kali River Rapids
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris
  • Meet Favorite Disney Pals at Adventurers Outpost
  • Naʻvi River Journey
  • The Animation Experience at Conservation Station

Avatar Flight of Passage is still “new” to many Guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and as such the attraction often has extremely long wait times. You may already be purchasing Lightning Lane for this ride, and come Disney+ Guests will need to use Lightning Lane purchases for Expedition Everest: Legend of the Forbidden Mountain as well.

Depending on crowd levels in Disney’s Animal Kingdom (and whether or not you rope drop Kilimanjaro Safaris) Disney Genie+ could still be worth the purchase for this theme park, though this is largely based on your individual interests.

We hope this post helps to make sense of the August 7 update and that you have some guidance in deciphering whether or not Disney Genie+ will still be worth it for you during a late summer trip to Walt Disney World. Happy planning!
