When talking about which franchises might appear at Universal Studios Great Britain, it’s easy to assume the lineup will lean on the usual heavy-hitters: Harry Potter, Jurassic World, or even British staples like Paddington and James Bond. But if Universal is looking for something truly different, it doesn’t need to look inward — it needs to look at its competition. Specifically, at the Bedrock land inside Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi.
Warner Bros. World didn’t just drop in a Flintstones ride; it built a fully immersive Bedrock area. Visitors step directly into the Stone Age, wandering through rock-carved houses, quirky prehistoric “appliances,” and storefronts that look like they were ripped straight from the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon.
The land’s crown jewel, Bedrock River Adventure, is a richly detailed flume ride that takes guests past animatronic Fred, Wilma, Barney, Betty, Pebbles, Bamm-Bamm, and Dino as they go about their everyday Bedrock lives. It’s playful, family-friendly, and packed with visual humor — exactly what the cartoon was known for.
The result? Bedrock has become one of Warner Bros. World’s most charming lands, balancing nostalgia for older fans with a bright, comedic atmosphere that kids instantly connect with. It’s a land that doesn’t rely on high-octane thrills or blockbuster intensity but instead thrives on personality, immersion, and humor.
And that’s something Universal’s parks — with their emphasis on darker, action-driven IPs like Jurassic Park, Transformers, and even Harry Potter — could stand to benefit from.
Universal has “yabba-dabbled” before, of course. In the mid-1990s, it staged The Flintstones Show at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Panasonic Theater. But a stage show is a far cry from what Warner Bros. has accomplished in Abu Dhabi. If Warner Bros. could make Bedrock into a full-fledged destination, there’s no reason Universal couldn’t go even further with the concept, especially in a brand-new park where everything is on the table.
With Universal Studios Great Britain now under construction in Bedford and slated to open in 2031, the race is on to see how it will distinguish itself from Orlando, Hollywood, Japan, Singapore, and Beijing. If it wants to stand toe-to-toe with Disneyland Paris as Europe’s premier theme park resort, maybe it’s time for Universal to take a page from its competitor’s book. Warner Bros. proved Bedrock works in Abu Dhabi — the question is, will Universal let The Flintstones rock in the U.K.?
