Do you have two-factor authentication turned on for your social accounts? You may want to take this post as a reminder to do so, as the official Disneyland Facebook and official Disneyland Instagram accounts were taken over by hackers for nearly 45 minutes early this morning.
The first posts that were not from Disneyland went up at approximately 4:00 a.m. (PT) and remained live on both Facebook and Instagram until about 4:45 a.m. In total, four static posts and two stories were shared to the account, with the official description on the Disneyland Facebook page changed as well.
In the screenshot below you can see the four recent posts that were not shared by Disneyland’s social media team:
The captions for the posts contained offensive language and racial slurs, which makes it all the more shocking that it took about 45 minutes for the posts to get removed. In total, Disneyland’s Facebook and Instagram have just over 9 million followers.
The posts have now been removed, including stories on both Instagram and Facebook and the description which was edited on Disneyland’s Facebook page.
While all of the posts have now been removed, Disneyland has not released a statement on the issue as of this writing, though it is possible that we will see one at some point today especially given the offensive language used in the posts.
This morning’s issue is not the first time Disney has dealt with hackers. While not on the social media front (and potentially more consequential) a number of user accounts for Disney+ were hacked in 2019 shortly after the streaming service launched.
Disney has also recently had some issues with their websites, with some Walt Disney World Annual Passes going on sale and then promptly being removed, and new character experiences listed as a Genie+ experience only to be removed shortly after.
Even with extra security measures taken, it is technically still possible for hackers to get through to social media accounts. While we wait to see if Disney releases a statement, you may want to take this time to check on your own security settings and set up two-factor authentication for your social accounts if you haven’t already!
We will continue to monitor Disneyland’s social accounts and be back with any updates here on DisneyTips.
