Disney’s Latest Theatrical Release Has Reportedly Received One of the Lowest CinemaScores in the Animation Studio’s History

If you’ve ever looked up a film’s audience rating, you know just how many film rating organizations are out there! However, one of the best movie criticism organizations based solely on public reactions is CinemaScore.

CinemaScore was founded in 1978 to create a “public voice” for movie audiences and their initial opinions, as most of the conversations were often controlled by professional film critics.

Not only that, but professional film critics may categorize a movie review much differently than an everyday moviegoer. Hence, CinemaScore was born!

However, CinemaScore recently gave Strange World (2022) the lowest grade in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ history.

Although CinemaScore doesn’t offer a grade for every animated Disney movie, each film it’s rated in the past has received an A, an A+, or an A-. Strange World, which arrived in theaters on November 23, has received a B.

While a B isn’t a bad rating by any means, it still marks a shift in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ history.

It’s worth noting that Strange World was already challenged from the start. Reports of the film’s openly gay character, the Clades’ family’s teenage son, and a blossoming romance have led to the film being banned in multiple countries.

Seeing as the LGBTQ representation is related to the plot, these scenes could not simply be cut out, leading to such a wide ban on this film.

While this is a win for LGBT representation and a testament to the Walt Disney Company’s commitment to diversity, it may have partially resulted in the ‘low’ rating.

However, not all hope is lost! Considering the film was just released a couple of days ago, and the holiday season has just begun, Strange World still has a chance to earn a more positive reception throughout the month.
