Walt Disney World is the most magical place on earth, but sometimes, even the most exciting days can be interrupted by headaches. Between the heat, excitement, and non-stop activity, it’s important to have a game plan for preventing and managing headaches during your trip. Whether you’re prone to headaches or just want to stay pain-free while enjoying all the rides and attractions, we’ve got some helpful tips to make sure your visit goes off without a hitch.

And remember, we’re not doctors—just Disney pros! These are the tips that work for us, but for specific medical advice, you’ll want to consult with your healthcare provider.

Don’t Skip Your Coffee!

If you rely on caffeine to start your day, make sure you don’t miss out on your morning cup of joe while you’re in the parks. Skipping your regular dose of caffeine can lead to withdrawal headaches, which are no fun when you’re trying to enjoy Space Mountain or meet Mickey Mouse.

There are plenty of coffee options in the parks, with Starbucks and Joffrey’s offering great selections. While Starbucks might be your go-to at home, we recommend trying Joffrey’s, the official coffee of Walt Disney World, for a unique touch of Disney magic. You’ll find their coffee stands throughout the parks and resorts.

And if you’re someone who likes to be prepared, consider bringing your own instant coffee or tea and some hot water to get your caffeine fix on the go. Trust us, keeping up with your caffeine intake can save you from a day-ruining headache.

Stay Hydrated

The Florida heat and humidity can sneak up on you, causing dehydration, which is one of the most common causes of headaches. Make sure you drink water regularly throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time in outdoor queues or walking long distances between attractions.

Bring a refillable water bottle to the parks and take advantage of free cups of ice water at any quick-service dining location. It’s an easy way to stay hydrated without spending money on bottled water. You can also bring hydration packs or electrolyte tablets to mix with your water and give your body an extra boost, especially if you’re sweating more than usual.

Get Enough Sleep

A trip to Walt Disney World can be full of early mornings and late nights, but skipping out on sleep is a sure way to end up with a headache. Lack of rest combined with the excitement and physical demands of the parks can quickly catch up with you.

While we understand the urge to rope-drop the parks every day, consider taking a mid-day break to catch a nap or relax by the pool. Heading back to your resort for a little downtime can make a world of difference, especially if you’re planning to stay out late for fireworks or nighttime shows. A quick nap might be all you need to avoid a headache and make sure you have the energy to enjoy your entire day.

Don’t Skip Meals

With so much to see and do, it’s easy to lose track of time and forget to eat. But skipping meals can lead to low blood sugar, which is a common trigger for headaches. Make sure you plan regular meals and snack breaks throughout your day.

Pack a few granola bars, nuts, or trail mix in your park bag to avoid hunger when you’re waiting in long lines or can’t get to a restaurant right away. These snacks can be a lifesaver, especially during those moments when you need to refuel but don’t want to wait for a table.

Caffeine for Headache Relief

Did you know caffeine can also be used to relieve headaches? For some people, a little caffeine can help treat a headache in its early stages. So if you’re feeling the start of a headache coming on, it might be time for a coffee break. But as always, balance is key—too much caffeine can have the opposite effect!

Take Breaks from the Heat and Crowds

Sometimes, the noise, crowds, and heat of Disney parks can contribute to headaches. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, find a quiet, air-conditioned spot to take a break. Attractions like the Carousel of Progress, The American Adventure, or Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room offer a chance to sit down and relax in the cool air for a few minutes.

If, despite your best efforts, you still end up with a headache, here are a few tips to manage it:

  • Take a break: Whether it’s heading back to your resort or finding a quiet spot in the park, give yourself some downtime to rest.
  • Take pain medication: If you’re prone to headaches, it’s a good idea to carry over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen or acetaminophen in your park bag. And if you forget, every park has a first-aid center where you can get assistance.
  • Use a cold compress: Cooling towels are great for more than just keeping you cool in the Florida heat. They can also help reduce the discomfort of a headache when placed on your neck or forehead.
  • Massage: Sometimes, a quick neck or temple massage can help alleviate tension headaches. Take a moment to stop and give yourself a little relief.

Stick to Your Normal Routine

If you’re prone to headaches, try to stick to your usual routines as much as possible while you’re in the parks. Whether it’s maintaining your regular caffeine intake, eating at normal meal times, or getting enough sleep, sticking to your regular habits can help prevent headaches from ruining your day at Disney.

Plan Your Day Wisely

Being strategic about your day can also help prevent headaches. For instance, aim to do outdoor attractions earlier in the day before the sun gets too intense. Use Disney’s Lightning Lane system to minimize time spent waiting in lines under the sun, which can lead to overheating and dehydration.
