James Bond is about to make an epic return — not just in cinemas, but in the world of gaming, where expectations for a 007 reboot have never been higher.

IO Interactive’s “007 First Light” is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious third-person action-adventure games in development, and it could be set to rival the hugely anticipated “Grand Theft Auto VI” (stylized as “GTA VI”), which arrives in May 2026.

The 007 game’s cast includes Patrick Gibson (Dexter: Original Sin) as a young Bond, Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q, Lennie James (The Walking Dead) as mentor John Greenway, and Gemma Chan (Marvel’s Eternals) as the newly introduced Selina Tan. Together, they provide a mix of new blood and recognizable archetypes that make MI6 feel more fully realized than in past Bond titles.

With Chan’s Selina offering a sharp, tactical counterpoint to Q, and James’ Greenway stepping into the field as an active partner, “First Light” emphasizes character-driven storytelling as much as its stealth and action mechanics.

IO Interactive’s goal of delivering an origin story for James Bond gives the project a unique identity, but its scale — globe-spanning missions, advanced AI systems, and high-profile actors — puts it in the same conversation as Rockstar’s upcoming gaming juggernaut.

The buzz around “Grand Theft Auto VI”, however, is at fever pitch. The game will bring fans back to the fictional Vice City for the first time in over two decades.

Positioned as the most ambitious project in the studio’s history, the game promises a massive open world, evolving gameplay systems, and a story built for a new generation.

The trailer broke records when it premiered online in December 2023, offering a first glimpse at protagonists Lucia and Jason as they navigate crime, chaos, and survival across a sprawling Florida-inspired setting. From neon-soaked streets and crowded beaches to rural highways and swamps, the game’s map looks to be the biggest Rockstar has ever built.

While both “GTA VI” and “007 First Light” can obviously enjoy success independently, it’s still hard not to compare the two upcoming third-person actioners. Which will dominate conversations more among gamers next year? Will Rockstar’s heavyweight outshine Bond, or will the globe-trotting MI6 agent, as usual, rise to the challenge?

Crucially, “First Light” is unrelated to the upcoming James Bond movie from director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049). This allows IO Interactive to experiment freely, expanding Bond’s world without cinematic constraints. But whether it can match “GTA VI” in terms of cultural impact remains to be seen, but with its March 2026 release date (just two months before Rockstar’s title), Bond is set to enter the same arena — and fans are watching closely.
