The world’s most famous spy is preparing for his next chapter. Amazon MGM has officially confirmed that Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part Two) will direct the next James Bond film, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) set to write. The project will introduce the seventh actor in the official series, following Daniel Craig’s definitive exit in No Time to Die (2021).

Craig’s tenure spanned five films, beginning with Casino Royale in 2006. His death scene in No Time to Die brought a rare sense of finality to the franchise, leaving the reboot to start anew. Now, anticipation has skyrocketed over who might inherit the role.

Austin Butler, who starred in Elvis (2022) and Dune: Part Two (2024), is among the many names that fans have floated. But the actor himself recently told Hits Radio UK, “Would I play James Bond? I don’t think that would be a good idea. Because I’m an American. I can do an accent but that would be kind of sacrilegious.”

He explained further: “Those movies meant so much to me, but I think that it’s got to be somebody who is from [the United Kingdom].”

That sentiment echoes long-held tradition. Almost every Bond been British, with Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig all hailing from the U.K. (George Lazenby is Australian and Pierce Brosnan is Irish). Yet the debate over nationality has grown louder in recent years.

After all, British actors frequently play American icons: Henry Cavill suited up as Superman, Tom Holland is Spider-Man, and Andrew Garfield balanced dual citizenship while slinging webs in The Amazing Spider-Man.

While Brits can convincingly embody American superheroes, should the reverse be out of bounds? Glen Powell seems to think so, as he recently responded to Bond casting rumors, saying, “a Texan should not play James Bond.”

The discussion highlights a broader tension around 007’s future. The character’s roots are undeniably British, yet the franchise’s global reach invites speculation about whether tradition should give way to reinvention. For now, Butler seems content to remain on the side-lines, joking instead in the interview that he’d gladly take on a villain role.

As for Bond himself, the identity of the next actor remains tightly under wraps. One thing is certain: whoever takes on the mantle will step into one of cinema’s most scrutinized roles.
