Disney Park’s Newest Attraction Experiences More Unfortunate Breakdowns

Any theme park attraction is sure to experience unexpected downtime at some point, but it is always disappointing with issues arise so soon after a new ride makes its debut.

And, to add insult to injury, ride breakdowns can come in several forms, but many Disney fans agree that errors specific to projection mapping can be some of the worst sights to see on otherwise spectacular attractions.

One of Disney’s newest attractions is Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disneyland Park. While the attraction has been running at Disney’s Hollywood Studios since 2020, a new version of the ride recently opened with the reimagining of Toontown at Disneyland.

Guests have been impressed with the ride on the West Coast, and many are particularly interested in the attraction’s queue which features several versions of Mickey Mouse cartoons over the years making it totally unique from the Walt Disney World version of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

Unfortunately, the newest version of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway has dealt with multiple instances of projection mapping issues since the ride opened on January 27, 2023. We previously reported on a bizarre error that left Guests with a perhaps memorable but also disappointing ride through the cartoon world (video here, warning: flashing lights). And sadly, instances of similar malfunctions have continued to occur as the ride enters its second month of operation.

During a recent trip to Disneyland Park, Twitter user @Chief__Leif shared video of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway with the projection mapping showing a rather typical Windows error rather than the cartoony setting:

The recent issues on Runaway Railway are not the first times Disney has experienced attraction downtimes due to projection mapping errors. In the past, fans have spotted major issues with the mapping on faces of Audio-Animatronics on Frozen Ever After and a similar error message has been seen on Journey Into Imagination, both in EPCOT.

As for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the continued projection mapping issues have caused occasional downtime for the attraction which then leads to long wait times and the potential for upset Guests who have purchased an Individual Lightning Lane.Disney recently removed the virtual queue for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, which may lead us to believe that the issues are getting under control if the company is willing to operate with a standby line on such a new attraction.

Still, we will continue to monitor the status of Disneyland’s newest ride, and keep you updated on future developments here on Disney Tips.
