Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland Park officially closed earlier this year. Both versions will be rethemed to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, focusing on characters from The Princess and the Frog (2009).

The Splash Mountain Mystery

Over at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, construction has become on the new ride. And although it’s known as “The Happiest Place on Earth,” that doesn’t mean it’s not without its strange occurrences or obscure stories.

A couple of weeks ago, Splash Mountain Archives tweeted about a mysterious head that some Guests have witnessed in the final couple weeks of the ride’s operation. Sitting behind the lighting for Brer Fox’s lair (apparently since May 2022) is a strange head mold whose identity is unknown.

Some have speculated that the head belongs to a new audio animatronic Disney plans to use for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, such as Princess Tiana. However, there has yet to be an official confirmation regarding what character it will (or used to) belong to. Perhaps it could even be the audio-animatronic Buzzy from the former EPCOT attraction Cranium Command. That animatronic character has been missing and suspected as stolen for years.

Splash Mountain’s Future

In the meantime, Disney Guests eagerly wait to experience the newly rethemed attraction at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will take Guests on a journey through the Bayou with Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, Mama Odie, and Louis the trumpet-playing alligator. It will utilize the same flume layout as the Splash Mountain ride, including the five-story plunge guaranteed to soak riders!

Presumably, the head behind Brer Fox’s lair will no longer be hiding out in the updated ride. But if you happen to be among the first to ride the new attraction, be on the lookout! You never know what you may see when you look behind you at any Disney World or Disneyland attraction.

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
