Disney’s newest live-action film may already be doomed before it begins. In 1937, Disney released the classic film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The animated film was ahead of its time, making The Walt Disney Company a pioneer in animation. Interestingly enough, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the first animated feature to be selected for the National Film Registry, recognized in 1989 for “being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant,” E! Online reports.
Disney is known for remaking classic animated films, which already has fans divided. Some believe the stories should be left alone, while others enjoy a new modern twist on a classic fairytale. Disney has created a live-action version of Snow White set to be released in 2024. Casted as Snow White herself is Rachel Zegler who has undergone scrutiny in more way than one for her role. The first controversy fans had was, “The actress’s participation in this film has been controversial since her casting was announced, as many could not fathom a Latina actress being cast for a traditionally white character,” as Inside the Magic details. We’ve seen a similar situation with The Little Mermaid (2023) as Halle Bailey playing Ariel. Nevertheless, Disney has not recasted due to fans remarks.
Now, Rachel Zegler is under fire but for a different reason this time.
Rachel Zegler Slammed for Disney Comments
If there is one thing Disney fans get riled up about, it’s bashing Disney. Rachel Zegler has been cast in the role of Snow White, yet she is very open about her opinion of the princess. Interview clips have resurfaced from an interview in 2022 with Entertainment Weekly that has fans enraged. She begins by saying she was scared of the classic 1937 film as a child, which is fair; The Evil Queen can be quite terrifying for a youngster. But the issue furthers when she dives into the modern twist the new film will entail.
“The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird! So we didn’t do that this time,” Zegler said in the interview. Additionally, she proceeded to say, “I just mean that it’s no longer 1937,” Zegler said, before adding, “She’s not going to be dreaming about true love; she’s going to be dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be.” The video can be seen below for full context.
