Is Walt Disney World Changing Its Name?

Walt Disney World opened on October 1, 1971, to the delight of eager Guests in Orlando, Florida. Although Walt Disney developed “The Florida Profect” in the 1960s, after the success of Disneyland Resort, he would not live to see its completion.

Walt Disney World Resort famously includes four theme parks, two water parks, several hotels, golf courses, camping areas, stores, and other magical entertainment venues. After Walt Disney passed away, the company wasn’t sure if they would continue with the project.

Walt’s older brother Roy Disney felt passionate about honoring Walt’s dream and came out of retirement to ensure the Resort was realized. In 1967, construction started, with the Magic Kingdom opening first, followed by EPCOT (1982), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (1989), and Disney’s Animal Kingdom (1998).

Originally, the company planned on naming the Resort, Disney World. Roy Disney fought against this, insisting that the name be changed to Walt Disney World in honor of his beloved brother.

He wanted the public to remember that the project was a product of Walt’s dream. Rumors have been flying around as of late that Walt Disney World Resort may shorten its name to Disney World.

TikTok creator @swizey addresses this in a video, stating that the location may indeed be changing its title. He claims that one of the reasons for the adjustment may be the result of Walt Disney becoming a problem for the company over the last couple of years.

He states, “Many accusations about Walt coming to light, of things that wouldn’t be so magical today.” The video creator acknowledges the fact that Walt is a cherished part of the Disney community, as the highly respected creator of the magic Guests know and love.

Over the years, people have formed their own opinions about the beloved founder of Disney Parks and Resorts. The TikTok creator suggests that profits would be a motivating factor in such a drastic change this late in the game.
