The Snow White Controversies

First was issue some had was over Rachel Zegler being cast as Snow White. She defines herself as a woman of color. And since skin color is an important plot point character trait of the story, many thought that the casting should have been different.

Next came leaked photos of cast costumes and the seven “magical creatures”. Disney first denied these photos were real, then had to admit the truth. This of course, brought up the next controversy…

No seven dwarfs. The Walt Disney Company decided to ditch the dwarfs and replace them with seven magical creatures of varying races, ages, and genders. And instead of casting actors with dwarfism as Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, and Dopey, only one of the seven is a little person.

Then the actress playing Snow White had many views of the original film and the story of Snow White overall that were…odd. She called the prince a stalker, criticized the idea of the Disney Princess dreaming about true love, and called the original animated masterpiece by Walt Disney “dated.”

She also went on to say she didn’t care for the movie, having only watched it once or twice. And she also slammed the former Snow White ride at Walt Disney World Resort.

Many hardcore Disney fans have taken issue with Rachel Zegler (and some of the other controversies). Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) is one of the most iconic Disney movies ever made.

Its what made the company what it is today. So naturally, people are troubled when someone attacks it. Especially someone whose starring in the remake and playing the titular character.

But aside from Disney fans, another group of people have taken issue with the remake – conservative Americans. Love them or hate them, they make up at least 40% of the population (see poll below).

In fact, many cite this large group of Americans, becoming anti-Disney as the reason why the company’s stock is down as well as park attendance and box office revenue.

Snow White and the Evil Queen

A right-leaning media organization named The Daily Wire has taken the criticism to a new level. They’ve decided to make their own Snow White movie, titled Snow White and the Evil Queen. It will star Brett Cooper (a pop-culture commentator on The Daily Wire) and produced by The Dailey Wire’s new production company Bentkey. The movie is aiming for a 2024 release date.

The trailer can be viewed here:

Although it will likely (due to copyright reasons) have to rely heavily on the Grimm’s version of the story, it is no doubt a swipe at the Walt Disney Company and an attempt to cut into their Snow White box office. We can likely assume this fairy tale version of Snow White will have a prince charming, wicked queen, and won’t be “woke.”

And in case there’s any confusion over the motive of this movie…The Daily Wire’s owner shared his sentiments on social media. He begins by commending the work and legacy of Walt Disney and then slams the direction the company has taken as of late.

Whether you agree with The Daily Wire’s politics or Disney’s political positions, one thing is clear: The Pop Culture War isn’t over.

About Steven Wilk

Steven has a complicated relationship with Disney. As a child, he visited Walt Disney World every few years with his family. But he never understood why kids his age (and older) were so scared of Snow White or Alien Encounter. He is a former participant of the Disney College Program (left early…long story), and he also previously worked in Children’s publishing, where he adapted multiple Disney movies and TV shows. He has many controversial opinions about Disney…like having a positive view of Michael Eisner, believing Return of the Jedi is superior to The Empire Strikes Back, and that Toy Story Land and Galaxy’s Edge should have never been built (at least not at Hollywood Studios). Every year for the past two decades, Steven has visited either Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani or went on a Disney Cruise. He’s happy to share any and all knowledge of the Disney destinations (and he likes using parenthesis a lot…as well as ellipses…)
